I'd like to grow some big pumpkins again next year. The last time I grew them successfully was about 7 years ago and I still enjoy looking at the photo of my son (who was then 3) sitting on one. My biggest was only about 125 pounds but that was at least something I could move around fairly easy. The next time I tried all of the plants died, apparently from some root rot. We're a bit too hot here to grow the really big ones without misting systems, shade cloth, etc.

I've got a patch here. No really big ones though, had about 75 or so from the first wave. Javelinas ate about 50 of those, although they wont be eating anymore! I am hoping the second wave will make it in time for halloween also. I have three or four different varieties, including the white ghost pumpkins. None have gotten any bigger than about 30lbs though. Although they might have if it wasnt for the javalina raid!

Richard , good post, got to love Halloween time. Harvey, were they "Atlantic giants"? I started some seed I bought during last winters over ambitious 'catalog season" and had to give the seedlings away , not enough space to do it right. Next years "veg" garden is all ready set : all the bananas I've collected in the past month and a half Tomatoes and Basil(this years new tomato will be "Cherokee purple" , Catalogs haven't even come out and it;s all planned and ready before Halloween!

Yes, Bob, I believe they were Altantic Giant, though they certainly didn't grow up like these:

Love it!!! Halloween is my favorite, will have to post pictures of my Halloween village, after its set up. My gal pal and I did a pumpkin patch again this year not a very big one but we got 10 pumpkins which keeps her grand kids happy I think the variey was Howden. We got started late so bought the plants and they did very well, we got some nice sized ones!

Harvey, Thanx for the great shots! Were they planning on carving a face or a front door!?
JustJoan, cant wait to see the pics of your Halloween Village! Luv stuff like that!
Dave, cant wait to see more pics of your incredible Haunted house & Lagoon, Super!! Oh, and great looking Avatar & pumpkin!!
Gave it my best shot & hoping I dont have to drag out the bicycle pump:

If it doesn't speed up, may have to use tweezers.... or orange paint & one of the melons!
Richard, Will definitely have a sign out for the Great Pumpkin!

Well once you get the vine going you can give the pumpkins a Sugar Water transfusion it helps boost the plant and creates heavier healthier pumpkins..

I've heard this, and started pouring all the extra sugar water from filling my hummingbird feeders into a potted brugmansia. It really took off!
