I have to say that when I first realized Gabe's age a few years ago I was very impressed. Since then I've been even more impressed. For someone to have such a passion at such a young age and then pursue that passion to such an extent...well, it really makes for a very special person. When he first moved to Hawai'i I realized that he really was moving on to the next level. Any field is very lucky to have such a passionate and devoted individual with such potential. I wish I had stumbled on to my passion years ago when I could have directed my life more solidly in that direction. In any case, I feel very fortunate that there is an individual out there with such an interest in Musa culture. Now the only thing that would benefit me more directly would be if through some misfortune Gabe had to move to zone 7 and started developing cold hardy varieties. Good work Gabe!

I knew sooner or later someone would dig up some dirt on me...


Fun fact about Gabe: the 15 is because my birthday is March 15th, and at one point for a (different) internet username, I needed a number and 15 seemed like a reasonable one. Coincidence I started using this website when I was 15 (I think), but I started with bananas when I was 14.

I'm going on near 8 years of studying banana, but the more I learn about bananas I also learn how much I don't know about them of course. The word "genius" really doesn't describe how I feel about my knowledge of banana, I prefer something more along the lines of "persistently dedicated enthusiast" or "fan". I have discovered a few, but very minor things about bananas, much of what I know is of course what other people have collectively found out and published over the years. So if you too want to be a banana "genius" or a "genius" or expert at anything, you can start by doing what I do...

1. Read a lot to gain some basic knowledge
2. Ask a lot of questions to experts
3. Gain experience by acting on the knowledge (practice) you gained from books and experts
4. Take lots of notes!

And based on math alone, if I've only been at this for 8 years, and I could theorhetically keep at it for the next 60 years or more...then I am clearly nowhere near expert yet as I have a lot more learning and practice to do.

Yes, with the internet it is pretty easy to dig up "dirt" on someone. At least in Gabe's case, "dirt" is a very complimentary article.

Gabe, I think you are right about the keys to being an expert. They also translate to success as a biologist -- not just a banana biologist. The two most important things are enthusiasm and perseverance. Here's to another 60 years of bananas for you.
