Default Fancy Hibiscus

I've been searching for a source of tissue cultured hibiscus with no success. Anyone know of a source?

I found this

Tissue Culture of hibiscus
« Reply #3 on: August 20, 2009, 07:46:58 AM »

Chris, I'd love to see you take a look at tissue culture hibiscus. I tried it myself, even built a pressurized clean box to do the work in. I only had one success, using Soft Spot, but that 1 plant was not enough to actually say it was a success. For some reason hibiscus do not easily grow in tissue culture conditions. I know of 2 big labs that specialize in plant tissue culture that tried it and declared hibiscus unsuitable for tissue culture. I have some new clues that might help though, so maybe we could figure out a way to do it. It would probably be valuable if someone found a protocol that actually worked reliably. Interesting project, anyway.

I'd suggest searching for someone in Hawaii. Although I live there, it would be just as easy for you to do it as me. I'd approach it through the university tropical horticulture people (Gabe15 on this list might be able to help you because he's a grad student up there). Search for the plant societies here; even someone in the orchid society might know someone who knows someone. There are plenty of hibiscus nurseries here, too, and Lyon Arboretum is an arm of the university that might have somebody who knows something. They have a web site.

Well, I know orchid sources, succulent sources, and I have a few 'nanner sources, now; but I don't have a clue about Hibiscus. (yeah, I know it is the state flower, but that's about all I know) I think the UofH may have sources, but the local nurseries would likely be better, or the sources the nurseries get their's from.

I think Tony was just giving me a link for fancy hibiscus, not nessarily tc. I do think these are grafted though, if I remember correctly.

Yes if you can't get tc's maybe some starter plants are the next best

Tony, thanks for the link to North Carolina Farms. That's what I wanted more so than tissue culture, but with all the searching I did I never found this. I went to the site and found exactly what I wanted and placed an order.

Uh, wanna buy some hibiscus. Can give you a good deal!

If you look at his listing many of them say "grafted". Cuttings grafted onto better rootstock. Cuttings still, as you say.
