I've never attempted growing mango since I am in zone 7a - that's why I've opted for growing Pawpaws (Asimina triloba) since they are cold hardy, disease and pest resistant and can produce heavily with little to no fertilizer/chemicals.
I love mangoes! I wish I could grow some - I saved a seed and was going to grow one in a pot but I don't have as much room and it gets too cold here for it to ever fruit I would say. Here is a website that sells cold-hardy mango. It says 9-11 zone but since you're 8b maybe you could create a micro climate if you plant it on the south facing side of a brick wall or house and provide shelter and rocks and stuff to keep it warmer. Good luck! https://www.fast-growing-trees.com/Mango-Trees.htm

I am very fascinated and excited about growing Pawpaws (Asimina triloba). I also am equally fascinated and excited to be growing: Pawpaw cultivars, Echinacea purpurea 'magnus', Asclepias tuberosa Butterfly Weed, Musa basjoo Cold Hardy Banana, Lycium barbarum 'Sweet Lifeberry', Passiflora incarnata 'hardy native maypop'. Future projects: Indigenous/native host plants for butterflies such as: Zizia aurea Golden Alexanders, Eutrochium maculatum Joe Pye Weed, Asclepias incarnata Rose Milkweed. |
