I wish I started it when the site started over a year ago. It would be really cool to look back on now. But hey, may as well start it now, right? :)

Today I planted a pink guava tree into the ground and I potted up five screw pine seedlings.

What other plants (besides bananas), if any, did you plant today?

I bought a Chamaerops humilis or "Mediterranean Fan Palm". Not that great, it just it was only 6.99!

After a long swim this morning I fiddled with the orchids in the greenhouse for the rest of the day, I didn't plant, but I did a lot of repotting. I worked mostly with my awarded C. skinneri plants. I have some pictures of them at:

Hello Ya'll,

I repotted a coconut palm - cocos nucifera. Two African violets. Three Butia Capitata seeds. Jelly or Pindo palm. Thanks for the ID on the seeds guys. Gave away some grapefruit that was full of seeds. Does that count? They will be planted later.

I googled that last vine, it looks pretty good. The nursery that has it is in your neighborhood. Maybe you bought it from them. Your planting a lot of material. Do you know the mature size of the plants? Planting is normally easy, but digging out an agressive plant, vine or tree can be a bear.

Today I planted some Variegated Canna that I stole from the Hotel on the beach...also, about 15 assorted palm seedlings, both frond and fan types. And lastly, I stole a Bird of Paradise, but the plant was tiny, I dont think it is a large type, even though I have never heard of a "Mini" And I don't mean stolen like from a store, just from a rental cottage that had a fire....so I took some plants...=]

Been busy this week planting stuff.
Off the top of my head:
I planted a 5' sugar apple tree into the ground that I had potted up.
Some pineapples, a dwarf bamboo, a buccaneer palm, a celeste fig tree, a Kerriodoxa elegans palm, a bunch of assorted bromeliads, a loquat tree, two Stuttgart canna, and some other stuff...

Planted a 12inch longPassiflora cinnabarina This one is native to Australia. It has Red flowers and green fruit with white pulp. Cold hardy to the 20's. So im told.:2129:

Potted up 2 yellow clivias that I (finally!) received from an Aussie eBayer (won in Dec - received in late Jan ... naughty ebay seller!). Initially had 'em potted in a single 8" pot, but I'm pushing the growth now in separate pots under grow lights.

Moved 8 variegated clivia sprouts (from an eBay seed seller in China - got 'em in @ 1 week after paying her ... WONDERFUL eBay seller!) from under their tinfoil to the light stand. I really am trying to get as much size on these pretty babies before spring as possible - then everybody gets to go outside to play in the shade bed!

Ooooh - also finished building 2 more light stands for seed starting, cuttings, etc! Built my 1st 2 stands while snowed in & anxious to have something - anything! - to do that had summer & garden overtones to it!



I'm really ready for spring to arrive ... it's just not as much fun to play in the mud & rain. Bahhh!

just started 1 package of Tacca seeds in my In door Green house YIPPY .

My indoor consists of a Small 10 g tank with a tank light for plants ( aquarium) stays 70f no hotter or the fan i got for a Computor will come on .

SO I engineered it up and will let ya know what comes with it i bought 6 white and 6 black . they came from India and She sent Extra WHOA . Tammy

Planted some anubias and Brazillian Swords in the stream, mounted some Aecmhea "Foster's Favorite" onto cork in the greenhouse, and purchased some new Bulbophyllum orchids!

My stream is 20 ft long, starts with a small (fake) bubbling waterfall and ends in about a 50 gal still pool. I built it in the greenhouse last spring. I'll try to show a few photos later.

I seem to have trouble posting photos to this Banana forum for some weird reason, but I will try. It'll probably have to be a string of separate photos.
This was my stream when I first started putting it in. I spliced together some pond liner and went to town. I got this idea for a stream from our local Butterfly Rainforest habitat up at UF. They of course have a huge setup. Mine is "tiny scale". I've always had a pond in the greenhouse, now I have a stream, still pool and a separate pond.

There is one koi about 6 inches in the still pool and a bunch of little minnows from the local creek, they keep mosquito larvae in check. There is also a nice large frog that lives in here and at least 3 snakes

Nothing at all, it is midwinter.

I am waiting for my phormiums and sikkimenses and heliconia rostrata
to sprout.

I am waiting for four month for my trhitrinax campestris to sprout.

I am waiting for spring so I can put my Yucca rostrata and Yucca
thompsoniana in the ground wich are in the cold greenhouse next to
trachycarpus plants / sabal minors plants / olive / passiflora.

I am waiting for spring to bring my three ensetes ventricosum outside.

in the greenhouse.


One must be mad to grow tropical species in zone 8.

hey where are you getting your trees . I ordered some and got Dead sticks same with Persimmons GRRR . the lady said wait a couple of Months i said Months Heck sent her bad feed back them there sticks where Hallow . Looks more like smoking twigs then sticks or even plants not even a root and she was selling them as trees . so any luck with a link ? Pwease tammy

I trade cuttings with other fig nuts, people on the Fig Forum at Garden Web, people from www.seedsavers.org, etc. Plus varieties from USDA/UC Davis. I have about 140 varieties in ground, 70+ yet to plant and cuttings from close to another 100 varieties. I also have available cuttings listed in the seedsavers yearbook.

This weekend I planted a Pygmy date palm, 2 firecracker plants, about 10 bromeliads, some Huecheras (gonna try them for the first time). I am going out now to plant 2 pindo palms, a Canary Island date palm, 2 phoenix sylvestrys palms, and whatever else I decide to pull out of the greenhouse and stick in the ground. Its 75 right now, we are supposed to see highs around 83 or so this week, so I think its time. Ave frost free is about March 10th here

Lilith - love your stream in your greenhouse. What did I plant today? 12 pink grapefruit seedlings! It looks as if the balsa tree across the road from me will start releasing seed shortly - would anybody like some? Wonderful leaves and big white flowers - don't know the regulations for this kind of stuff though, so if it is forbidden please tell me.

You are in Hawaii, right? The Agricultural Laws dealing with plant import and export in HI are convoluted at best. It used to be that only certain things could not be sent TO Hawaii, including orchids, bananas, bromelaids,coffee plants, and some other stuff, without a specific import permit.

This permit had to be obtained by the receiver in HI, not by the sender. And, everything sent OUT of HI to the Mainland had to be "certified" for export on the HI end as well.

But along about 2005 all of the states rewrote their Ag laws and now its harder to send anything into or out of HI. I would advise you to check with you local office there before you send plants out or accept trades, just to save yourself some potential problems.
