Re: What did you harvest today (other plants)?

Kondozi melon, a rare melon from Afghanistan. The leaves had covered it well the pill bugs had started at it before I noticed it today and picked it. Nice light green flesh, firm, great flavor. A friend had given me seeds a couple of years ago and I had a hard time getting them to germinate. This came from a plant grow a long ways away from any other melon so I expect it's offspring to come true to type.

I picked, possibly, my last tomatoes of the season. Cold front moved in yesterday. Last night dipped to 35 and tonight is supposed to get colder.

What kind of persimmons do you have? I've got Fuyo which is just turning yellow right now. I figure another month and I will start harvesting. The shape is not the same as yours.

10 pounds of 'Lickvers Pride' Pineapple Guavas from one bush. Adjacent to it is a 'Nazemetz' -- equally loaded!

Hah, we just picked some pineapple guava of various types (most are from older seedling plants) today also. I pointed out to my son that they were dropping and he gathered a bunch up and gave some to his friends from the farm next door.

Re: What did you harvest today (other plants)?

With our first cold front/frost almost a month ago, I thought that I had picked the last from my garden. We have had several days below freezing...but not too far below.

I still have a few tomatoes that have not died. I picked about a quart of cherry tomatoes and a half dozen wilfords. Also, just a couple days ago, I picked about a quart of green beans...definitely the last of them this season.

You have to love those micro climates. My brothers tomatoes froze solid Oct 1.

Somewhere around 200-250 pounds of pomegranates, consisting of about 20 varieties. Some are split and will be juiced or turned into jelly and some others will be sent to a customer of mine that encouraged me two years ago to plant some pomegranates for commercial production. I only got poked 20 times or so, but no blood! :ha:

Re: What did you harvest today (other plants)?

My dog is so helpful. I went outside to check on him about mid-day and there on the back door mat was a big fat pineapple guava. So I took a bucket up to the guavas and sure enough, the rain had knocked off about 2 gallons of 'Lickvers Pride' pineapple guavas onto the ground. There's still about 5 gallons on the shrub with a few days of ripening to go.

Re: What did you harvest today (other plants)?

My plants still aren't producing many pineapple guava yet, but we got a bag full at my sister's again where we had Thanksgiving dinner. Her "tree" is large, about 12' tall, and has a good crop with any large fruits (larger than Jumbo chicken eggs). I may want to airlayer it or make a graft from it one of these days to see how it does here.

I was wrong.. I have over 6.5 bushels of pecans

Re: What did you harvest today (other plants)?

Well I can say my estimate was wrong again.. As the winds kick up along with the squirrel count #125 I'm over 7.5 bushels of pecans, and decided to donate 2.5 bushels to the local food bank so those folks can enjoy them like my neighbors :^)

I got this plant from Lowe's as tropical white. I think it's Bangkok guava .

Interesting. "Tropical White" is a trade name used by La Verne's for one of their guava cultivars.

Richard this is the one I showed you when you were here. This guava never gets soft until it rots. The other guava from Lowes ,topical pink, has no pink yellow skin white inside.

harveyc 12-11-2009 04:25 PM

Re: What did you harvest today (other plants)?

La Verne's is a vendor for Lowe's. Some people up in the Bay Area have had some Lowe's and Home Depot stores do special orders from La Verne's for them.

Ong's guava reaches up to 2 pounds and it is the hard type like yours, Tony.

First three !Are the littles dots in the fruit ok?are they look healthy.?I taste it and the flesh is very sweet and flavorful, yellow-orange fleshed -few seeds-the strong and pungent smell typical of most Papaya.

I have 2 jaboticabas that I bought 55 years ago. They were 20 years young at that time. It took 10 years to get a good crop. When my parents planed to sell there home I brought the trees to our yard. This one fell over once in hurricane Andrew and and 3 times 5 years ago when we were hit with 3 big storms. In the last years I have trimmed off half of the growth, it's just to big.
Photobucket

I moved this one a second time to get it in to a lighter area. This one also fell over in Andrew. It's only in the last few years that it started to have real good crops. They produce fruit off and on all year around. The best crops are from Jan.-June.

Re: What did you harvest today (other plants)?

Thanks jnstropic!

I had just purchased property the month Andrew hit, and had not planted anything yet. But Charlie got us with the eye wall. It laid down one mango tree and damage several others.

I remember driving through Homestead after Andrew, and the place we stayed on our Honeymoon was a slab of concrete. The bulldozers had not yet gone to work on it.

Nice orchids.

Thank you for the information! Good weather, good growing, and a quiet hurricane season to you. :2239:

SBL, the Jaboticaba tastes sweet inside not like any other fruit, even though it looks like a grape.
