Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?

Sometimes it is hard to decide to graft when the tree is in bloom. But I did graft anyway. Here's my late bloomer. Already the Japanese and Russian plums have shed petals and have fruitlets. The cherries and the nankings are in full bloom right now. The peaches and nectarine flowers are already waning. The European plums and the Native american plums are still at budswell. This plant alone have more than 10 prunus species or prunus hybrids grafted together, including almonds. It will have apricots next year. Perhaps within 2 years after some of the pluot plant patents have expired, I will graft those also.

So far it has several sweet Cherries, Japanese Plums, European Plums, Russian Plums, White Peach, Yellow Peach, White Nectarine, Yellow Nectarine, and one each of Almond, non-patent Aprium, non-patent Plumcot, non-patent Peach Plum hybrid, Cherry plum hybrid, and a couple of Nanking cherries.

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?

mskitty, you're welcome!

Here's one of my most beautiful flowering nectarine. Aside from fantastic fruits, the flowers are enchanting. Sometimes I just stare at them for hours doing nothing. Arctic Glo White Nectarine. This bloom is more than 15 days old. The blooms opened in March 1, and it still looked good yesterday. Very showy, big and long lasting flowers. There are other flowers of other peaches nectarines that are double and very showy. I might get those next year for double purpose duty, ornamental and fruit production. We can have both worlds too.

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?

This is supposed to be manzano apple. It survived this winter and lost all of its leaves and was surprised that it is now pushing out bloom. This was neglected three year old banana. I'm beginning to doubt that this is the real manzano apple. I have a bigger mother stem last year but that one was toppled over by the strong wind. This once daughter pup decided to bear blooms for the mother.

I'll wait and see if this is the real manzano apple.

Joe, my favorite peach is double-blossom "Saturn" -- not to be confused with the "Saturn donut" peach sold at grocery stores and some nurseries. Here's mine from Dave Wilson nursery on Nemagard rootstock. The blossoms are just about spent now and there are 2-3" leafs poking out just about everywhere. Immediately surrounding the tree are daisies that come up every year.

As for me, the mother plant is a plout and I have grafted many other plouts, apricots, and plums ( sse the tags) and all of them are blooming.

Joe: My next want to grow bananas is a manzano. Do you think it will survive here in Salinas? I used to have one a TC that I ordered but it did not survived. perhaps if I buy a bigger one it will.
But so far I can not find one even at we be bananas.

If you can wait, I can give you a pup when they come. It should be cold hardy enough for your place. At least the p-stem will survive there, and that's what's needed for a chance at fruiting.

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?

Thanks Joe, like you said a few weeks ago the winter here in California was great for reaching expected chill hours.

Here's what the rest of my pit fruits are doing -- a grand 'ol Apricot that came with the property is dropping petals now after an enormous fruit set, a Green Gage plum that was solid white a week ago, and a Panamint nectarine that is just starting to show color.

Richard 03-17-2008 01:41 PM

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?

As for the Pomes I'm currently growing, the Hood pear was solid in white 2 weeks ago but has mostly flushed out with leafs. On the other hand, the Pettingill apple has only poked out a few leafs at the top and does not bloom until April or May -- producing a harvest in the Fall.

I noticed that your trees are cut on top. I don't do that because I am Leary I can make a mistake. Is there any art of doing it?

Thanks Richard. I just pruned drastically my Italian prunes yesterday although they are now flowering. I know it is not time to prune and lost a lot of flowers but I can wait till next year. It is just getting too tall over 15 feet.

This is my santa rosa plum that I have grafted many European plums to it. Notice the different size and shape of flowers? It is because they are different cultivars. Imagine I just grafted them last summer. Some are over 3 feet long.

Yucca elephantipes (white and amazingly fragrant)
Cannas (bright neon orange)
Callas (white)
Sempervivae (yellow)
Roses of many descriptions
One of my dwarf cavendish bananas
A barrel palm
Three different types of hibiscus
Aloe arborescens
Some african lilies and african daisies
Dandelions - there's no escape! they followed me here!
The fig tree
St. John's Wort
An ice plant of some sort.

It's pretty neat to be somewhere that constant bloom is possible.

Yeeks, no. I'm in Quito Ecuador, which is Pichincha province, but definitely not Peru.

I miss my Loja garden, which was in the south.

Edit - the map should be closer to accurate now.

Multi-Grafted Cherry grown in pots. Yes, cherry can be grown in pots and they can be productive too! Gisela 5 is the rootstock. I'll be assembling one multi-graft on Krymsk 5 rootstock and observe how they perform in pots. My 24-n-1 Cherry Tree is in various stages of bloom at the moment. It is 28 ft tall and I let it be, due to my neighbor's Redwood Tree.

Happy Easter. And here's what's blooming.

Assorted Multigrafted Apples. Apples have diffent colored flowers too, not only their fruits. I have red fleshed and pink fleshed apples, as well as assortment of skin colors. I lost track on how many apples I've got. But if it is fireblight tolerant and tastes good for the inland Valley growing, most likely I've got them grafted already:

Happy Easter. And here's what's blooming

A collection of pomes in one tree. The Pome fruits includes Quinces, Apples, Asian Pears, European Pears, Asian x European Pear hybrids, Hawthorns, Loquats, Medlars, and others. The quinces are blooming and some apples are starting to open up. The pears are well on their way to fruit filling, very few petals left to drop.

I have 7 types of quinces on this tree. It also has 7 types of apples, 1 crabapple, 4 Types of Asian Pears, 6 European Pears and 2 Asian x European Pear hybrid all on the same tree. I used to have a hawthorn and loquat on this tree but they died, long term incompatibility problem, but I will find a more suitable interstem later to make them long lasting. Already I have grafted some good candidate interstems unto it and should be ready next year.

Note that the new grafts are already pushing out and some are even blooming already.

Alpinia zerumbet, aka shell ginger. It rained, so we get flowers for all of about 48 hours on the canes. They smell fantastic, even though they're short-lived.

my tulips look like their fixing to bust open(early spring variety), all of my muscari has bloomed, i have hycinths opening and my ornamental plum has buds all over it. my weeping cherry tree looks like it might bloom before the end of next week, and my climbing roses have lots of nice leaves. my peony's are getting tall, my bee-balm is spreading like wild fire, and my iris' are getting tall and the leaves are looking great. found baby leaves on my purple cone flower, and my white and pink dogwoods are finally opening their leaves.when my dogwoods are in full bloom i will plant my tomatoes and strawberries outside. my solomons seal is finally popping their heads up( i really love that plant) and my pop-ups are about 1 ft. tall. need to cut the grass but till the flowers start to bloom im not cause of the honey bees. oh and i have lots of dandylions in bloom.LOL! they are staying in the yard also because of the honey bees.im not thrilled with having the dandylions in the yard but the bees are. so they stay.

when i move back to fl, i will miss my peonies and glads. the only way i can have them is if i live close to jacksonville. but i want to be farther south. i could put them in pots and then in the freezer, but they have to have 45 days of almost freezing (so they say) to get blooms.and yes the tulips will be in the freezer mix. i love parrot tulips. my mom has some coral- orange ones. finally afer 3 yrs of BEGGING i got some.
