Wow those are beautiful begonias. My mom's friend has some that look similar but they are dark red. I didn't know there were double flowering begonias until this year lol

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
Nice pics, especially like the orchids.
Willow87, that looks like an Angels Trumpet, not a moon flower. Moon flower is typically a vine with large heart-shaped leaves, and is a close relative to the Morning Glory. Also, the moonflower opens up about 4pm and only lasts one day. |

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
Thanks Yug for correcting me. My datura blooms only last one night and die the next day. Is that normal?

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
Datura stramonium, also called Jimson Weed, is the main one I'm familiar with. I think that is a wild type of Angel's trumpet, also called brugmansia. The blooms on the wild one typically last one day.
I did some searching for common names for Datura stramonium, it turns out that it IS sometimes called Moonflower. So you were correct, sort of, because I think what you have is not D. stramonium, I think it is Datura wrightii (which I don't know much about). It wouldn't surprise me if D. wrightii was also called Moonflower. I've never before heard of D. stramonium called by called that name. The names I'm familiar with are - Datura, Jimson Weed, Devil's Weed, Locoweed, Devil's Cucumber, and Hell's Bells. Moonflower is a new one on me. The Angel's Trumpet is Datura arborea which is a larger plant with pendulous blooms, and sometimes different colors, too. Last edited by Yug : 09-17-2011 at 11:21 PM. |

Thanks HBL, It looks very much like the Rafflesia of Asia, found in Borneo and other forests. Alsorts of Insects drop in and don't get out. It flowers but you are very lucky to witness it flower. Quote:

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
My plant is only a foot tall, I thought it would be a taller plant but it doesn't seem to be producing any vertical growth. It does look like Datura wrightii. I got the seeds from another member and it was just labeled datura. Its become one of my favorite flowers, I just wish the blooms lasted longer.

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
Datura flowers point towards the heavens hence the nickname Angel's Trumpet.
Brugmansia flowers point downward hence the nickname Devil's Trumpet. (This is an internet shot) My blooming shots for today! ~JaNan
