Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
I have been very busy this spring. That is why I acquired the Water Hyacinths only now. I have
to do that every spring, because they cannot survive the winter here. This is the first one to bloom. And this is the overall setting. I had taken that picture about 3 weeks prior to the hyacinth pics. The big bush in the background is a black lace elder.

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
Olafhenny, That background shrub,
I bought one similar this year. Mine is called Sambuscus Nigra. I may buy two more. Two of my Maples were completely defoliated these last two years and these come a very close second and they flower.

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
Hi Orinoko,
That is the same thing. Sambucus Nigra comes in (at least) two cultivars. Sambucus Black Beauty and Sambucus Nigra 'Eva'. If you want to replace the effect of Japanese maples, Eva with its lacy leaves is your choice. See Black Beauty: Sambucus 'Black Beauty' - Elderberries and the 'Eva': Black Lace Elder - The Plant for Passionate Gardeners But beware these things grow extremely fast, but can also take extreme pruning. About pruning: It is recommended, that you prune your elders (either for a more 'bushy' appearance or to curtail their growth) just about now, before they start next year's flower buds in August. I have trimmed the one in the picture to about 1/4 of its size yesterday and have no doubt, that it will be again just as big next year. Having said all this, the arborist, who trims our tamarisks each spring also pruned back the ‘Eva’ I planted at the front gate of our strata and it still had quite a few flowers in June. Good luck, Olaf

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
My neighbor across the street has this in his front bed. I just asked him what it was! He pruned it hard today. Thanks for the ID and info. Now I want one....but where to put it? Oh well, that shouldn't stop a real gardener. LOL
