Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
I don’t really have a chance, to compete with the splendor of flowers presented by “southerners”
like Tony, JaNan or Hazel. (Only Sherry has defended the fort well for the northern regions) :) Nevertheless, here is my modest contribution to this thread and, although it is spring here now, any bloom we have is still based on winter blooming varieties. Probably the most rewarding "flower" in my garden is the Winter Jasmine. I took cuttings from this on in late November and in December… …to add the life flowers to x-mas table decorations and now here in April they are still going strong. They open outdoors in late January, early February Another winter stalwart is the Winter Pansy. They reseed themselves in the first days after the summer heat abates, start blooming in late fall until snow and the same blossom, which got snowed under in December shakes the snow off in February and keeps right on going. Winter blooming Heather puts on a big show in late winter. A little specimen is here shown with one of the first flowers of Variegated Aubrieta and a Dragon Blood Sedum poking through. Vinca Minor is getting ready to unfold its prime flowering period. This last pictures is an embarrassment to me. It was given to me by a gardening friend and I abused it by planting it into a pot, which was exposed to the elements all winter. I would like to look up how to treat if better, but I do not know its name and I am too uncomfortable to go back and ask the lady. I just know, that it prefers shade – and it has that alright. So if somebody can help me identifying it, I would be grateful. Olaf |
