Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

:woohoonaner::woohoonaner::woohoonaner:
I knew this was coming but .... am still stunned to get a new Holly from the Hollyberrylady. No one else I know got one of these from you in your many trades and I didn't even send anything in trade ( we just send each other the plants the other wants at this point). I've wanted one of these for so long and never picked one up for myself but to have you send me one is so much better.....cost effective too:ha:

Seriously I love it ! It's still in the shade after being in shipment for a while and losing a few leaves and berries in transit which is expected so I'll baby it and gradually get it in to full sun over the next few days while I pamper it and then I'll post some more pics after it settles in it's new permanent spot in the new garden I put in this spring!:woohoonaner:

Thanks Hollyberry!!!!!

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Bob...

Only for someone I admire so much as a gardener and cherish dearly as a friend. I really am glad you received it and like it so much. I know it will be given the very best of care...another reason I sent her to you.

You've got a 2 in 1 "Blue Girl" Hollyberry shrub with a grafted "Blue Boy" branch and it will be so nice this winter. Can't wait for some of the Hollyberries to ripen and turn red for you soon too. Next year, I'll send you "Blue Princess" with a grafted "Blue Prince" branch.

Your Holly is the first of the blue Hollies in the Ilex Meserveae series, created by a lady with the last name "Meserve" so they were named after her. This is the actual Christmas Hollyberry that you have. So excited to watch it grow along with you, in this thread.

Here's some shots I took on the day I bought your "Blue Girl"...

Here she was 2 weeks later about 5 minutes before I boxed it up to mail off to you...

It really looks great for you Bob, and I'm just tickled that you have it. It was my pleasure getting it for you and I look forward to sharing the rest of my Hollyberry shrub collection with you.

Enjoy!!!

From your friend,

HbL

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Here's the plant I really wanted to get for you, Bob...

and still can if you don't want to wait until next Spring...

You know the nursery I got your shrub from, mislead me as to the type it was. My pic shows the hybrid I had intended for you though, called "Blue Princess".

You also know, as compensation, the nursery is giving me a complimentary "Blue Princess" 2 in 1 shrub to make up for their mislabelling, and I am sending it to you next Spring. However, after seeing the shot above, I doubt you will want to wait until then! :ha:

I do have a separate "Blue Princess" and "Blue Prince" shrub for you that I can mail now if you can't wait, but they are not the grafted type I'll have for you in Spring. I could even just get you a lone female until Spring. You decide what you want...

Here too is my little "Blue Boy" but he's still very young...

Unfortunately, I do not have the 2 in 1 grafted type like you do in this variety though, and actually have two separate male & female shrubs...

Imagine that...you've got a nicer shrub than the Hollyberry Lady!

My "Blue Girl" is even smaller than her partner. I do love the blue-ish hue of the leaves and this type that you and I both have is the first of the blue Hollies in this series.

Looking forward to seeing your shrub in the ground soon, Bob...

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Hi Hollyberry,I'm happy as can be with the shrub I have. It's been babied in shade and will go in the ground tomorrow and I'll take some pictures and post them then. I think we may get much needed rain here so.... so much the better if that's the case.
As tempted as I am I wouldn't ask you to send me your shrub in the pic and will gladly wait till next spring....... then again:ha:

Big thanks ( can't thank you enough really , I,m still in shock) to my old pal the Hollyberry Lady!

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Hope that's not just wishful thinking, Bob. We need several days where it rains like in Florida; torrential downpour for fifteen minutes, and then sunny again.

Bob 08-11-2010 03:35 PM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Yeah as it turned out wishful thinking for sure.... over 90 here and not a cloud to be seen!

I'm afraid the jaws of life couldn't pry this actual shrub from my clutches, Bob! :ha:

You would pretty much need to steal it, to get it from me...

I was just showing mine so you could see what a "Blue Princess" looks like.

However, I can easily get you a lone female like mine and also already possess a male and female "Prince" and "Princess" in one pot that they've called "magic berry" but they are not grafted. You just need to decide what you want to end up with, considering you'll have a male graft in the Spring.

Did you get that thing in the ground, yet?

Here's my 2 in 1 grafted "Princess" outside. One of them anyway...

This is what they're giving us free next season, and I'll be sending to you. You can easily see why it's a hybrid. It's never without berries and those ones in the picture have been on the shrub for nearly a year!

Aren't you the one who's approaching your 65th, in September?

You should have said "best"!!!

Don't rush me! It'll be 50 in september but , I dont need a reminder:ha:

The Hollyberry Lady 08-12-2010 10:58 AM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

50, eh?!

Not to worry, because once you're over the hill, you begin to pick up speed!

Besides...

I'd much prefer being over the hill, than under it! :ha:

As you age Bob, try to remember these uplifting perks I found online for you...

1. Your supply of brain cells will finally be down to a manageable size.

2. Your secrets will be safe with your friends because they won't remember them either. (except for me because I am decades younger than you are! )

3. You'll sing along with elevator music. :0517:

4. Your joints will be more accurate meteorologists than the national weather service.

5. You'll have a party and the neighbors won't even realize it. :ha:

6. People will call at 9 PM and ask, "Did I wake you?"

7. People will no longer view you as a hypochondriac.

8. Things you'll buy now won't wear out. :02:

9. You'll be able to live without sex but not without your glasses.

10. You'll enjoy hearing about other peoples operations.

11. You'll get into heated arguments about pension plans.

12. You'll be able to eat dinner at 4 P.M. :bananas_b

13. There'll be nothing left to learn the hard way.

14. You'll no longer think of speed limits as a challenge. :0519:

15. You'll quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who walks into the room.

16. Your investment in health insurance will finally begin to pay off. :drum:

17. You won't remember who sent you this list.

Totally teasing of course. After all, would you expect anthing less of me? Maybe it might have been better if you'd said "best" instead of "old", eh?! :ha:

Here's what you really wanna hear...

50 and Fit

Fifty's good, so ignore the detractor
From biking (OR running, or hiking or swimming) you are benefactor
Of health plain to see
You look thirty-three.
You're fit! And that's always a factor.

I guess you do look pretty good for 50, from the pics I've seen you post in the threads from time to time, but don't let it go to your head.

This is just too funny though...

The Golden Age

With the average cost for a Nursing Home per day reaching $188.00, there is a better way when we get old & feeble. I have ascertained that I can get a nice room at the Holiday Inn for around $65.00...that leaves $123.00 a day for beer, food (room service), laundry, gratuities and special TV movies. They have a swimming pool, a workout room, a lounge, washer, dryer, etc. Most have free toothpaste and razors, and all have free shampoo and soap. Super 8 is somewhat more economical and they have a free breakfast, though you usually have to walk next door for lunch and dinner.

There may be a bit of a wait to get that first floor room, but that's OK, it takes months to get into decent nursing homes. There is the Senior Bus, the Handicap bus (if you fake a decent limp), a Church bus or van, cabs, and even a regular bus. For a change of lunch take the Airport Bus and eat at one of the fast food cafe's there. The Inn has security, and if someone sees you drop over, they will call an ambulance. And should you break a hip, the American Way is to Sue. What more can you ask for? As a bonus, they all have AARP and other Senior discounts.

So: When I reach the Golden age help me keep my grin.
Just check my old rickety ass into the nearest Holiday Inn! :ha::ha::ha:

Now back to Hollies...

Is that thing planted already?

I happen to like elevator music :05:( ska lately here) and you can get some good deals eating at 4 and you don't have to wait for a table.... unless it's Thursday all you can eat when the seniors turn in to jedi light saber masters with a cane!:jedinaner:

Believe me..... with you as a best gardening pal there's plenty left to learn the "Hard Way" :ha: ..... and I will remember who sent the list ( wrote it down:2738:... can't remember where I left it ... but...).... just wait!

I was going to post another pic of the holly in the ground but..... forgot:ha:

Nice to see you've finally acknowledged me for who I really am Bob...your BEST gardening pal!

Now was that really all that hard for you to do? :goteam:

So you intend on paying me back, eh? Don't worry, I'll be nice from now on. :ha:

In fact, on your birthday, instead of wishing you a big happy

TH....

I'll just wish you a Happy 20th anniversary of your 30th Birthday!

Now then, getting back to Hollyberries...

When do I get to see pics of that baby in the ground?

Hope you know I was just teasing and don't really think you guys are old...

just mature. :p

Or in Bob's case...immature! :ropingnaner:

Seriously though (:ha:) you ol...I mean mature guys, are cool in my books, so never have a doubt for a second. :hiiiiyanana:

Bob was just telling me today about the sale they had on "Depends" that he couldn't wait to get in on, and I didn't even make a wise crack like I normally would have.

I was always taught to have respect for the elderly, I mean my elders, but as you can see, it didn't take! :ha:

What were we talking about here anyway?...

Oh yes, Hollyberry shrubs. If Bob ever takes a shot, we may get to see it planted in the ground soon.

Hopefully, before Christmas...

The Hollyberry Lady 08-19-2010 09:40 AM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Alright, enough of the wise cracks already, Bob! :ha:

Check out the shrub I got for you yesterday!

I simply couldn't live with you not having the very best from me, and although the first hursery made a mistake about your shrub being a "Blue Princess", this nursery did not...

Isn't she a stunning beauty?! She's 100% female and the hybrid offspring of the shrub you have now. I'm sure the pic tells you why it's superior. An explosion of berries that won't stop...

: o

This is the shrub I intended for you Bob, to make your Winter and Christmas very special. You will love the ornamental beauty. The berries on your shrub are in mid ripening and they will still be intact next Fall! This variety has a constant show of hollyberries and is never without fruits even for one day.

I had to prune your shrub last night when I got it home, for shipping purposes. It was huge. As I didn't want to cut off even one berry, the fruits determined where I made the cuts. You shape these shrubs over time, not all at once.

You'll love this...

I bought the bush from the very best, top of the line nursery in London, that's been around for over 30 years and it even came with a one year guarantee! It's the very place that my mom bought the shrub we got when I was four years old, and enjoyed immensely throughout my childhood! This place sells nothing but the best and the quality is amazing. Anything you get from them, thrives. You'll see. Too cool, eh?

This is the bush I wanted for you, right from the start and just couldn't wait until Spring to send you it. So happy I was able to get one for you. You will now be surrounded by a berry wonderland forevermore!

Enjoy, Bob. Now you've got my whole collection, and you are the only one who has received something like this from me...twice!!!

Hope this makes you happy!

I can't wait to read Bob's reaction when he sees his new shrub that I just got yesterday for him. The one I sent before is nice, but it's inferior to "Blue Princess".

We'll see what he thinks soon...

Bob 08-19-2010 04:36 PM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

WOW!:woohoonaner: ..... Holy........ flocking schmidt!!!!!:woohoonaner:

Are you crazy?????

You know I loved the first one as much as can be and am babying that one but seeing this....... Yup its even that much better like you had mentioned and insisted but now seeing it..... ( hate to admit it) ... you were right. Do they all have this many berries and spreading habit?

Is it in the mail yet?????

I can imagine it looking... both of them actually ... spectacular this winter... especially around Christmas time when maybe there'll be some snow to accent them and the berries when they really come in to their own and hollies are at their best for people to enjoy.

I think I'm going to put this one where I planted the last so I'll see it more often with less effort and move the first one you sent around near my back deck since it hasn't been in the ground long enough to have a big shock yet when it's moved.

Guess you felt sorry for the "old man" so you went out and got me the perfect shrub to enjoy in my old age:ha:

I really am kind of stunned / surprised and don't know what to even say other than a big:

THANK YOU!

As usual I'm a bit late sending some of the things I promised to send you but guess I'd better go start looking for a box!:ha: Seriously though , I'll be sending up a package next month with some cool stuff I know you want and some surprises for sure.

I'll post a pic of the Blue boy/ Girl in a bit so you can see it's doing well..

The Hollyberry Lady 08-19-2010 05:06 PM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Oh I'm so glad you love it, Bob! I knew you would. You are very welcome, as the pleasure was all mine...and a chance to save face! :ha:

I couldn't very well not give my very best gardening pal the untimate, now could I?

No, not all Hollies grow like and have the same spread and branching habit as "Blue Princess". Keep in mind she's a Hybrid, so she is spectacular in every way. Their is also an over-lap when the new berries begin to form, a number of the old ones still stay intact so she always has an ornamental display of fruits and lots of them. "Blue Girl" has a period before the new blossoms form, when the majority of her berries fall and she is without for a couple months with only one or two or no fruits at all.

You seem to think that Holly shrubs can only be appreciated at Christmas time, but that's only because you've never had a "Blue Princess" before. She is the Holly of all Hollies, bar none! One of the most prolific and abundant berry producers of all of them! You will be stunned at how colorful and Christmassy it looks even in Spring and Summer.

Goofing around today, and took some more shots of your beautiful photogenic shrub...

It's so crammed with berries, it's amazing...

Good Lord, could there be anymore fruits...

No, it is not in a box yet Bob, but rest assured it will be very soon! You will really enjoy it all year round. This thing is just gorgeous!

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Nah, I don't think you're really ready for her yet. Besides, she's in the middle of ripening...

You wouldn't want to interrupt this wonderful process, now would you? As you can see, some of them are barely blushed with red yet...

Bob 08-22-2010 09:37 AM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Well make it snappy , though it's probably best to let them ripen before it gets shipped( very soon!:ha:)

Here's the Blue boy/ girl in the garden today after some much needed rain. Some of the tips of the branches were pruned slightly. I doubt you'll be able to make it out in the pics but the first berries are just starting to turn an orange color while most are still green. If I ever get that Blue Princess I'm going to transplant it to this spot though so I can see it all the time.... not that I dont see all my plants all the time anyway:ha:
It might look a little crowded but there's an E. Maurellii and a small variegated agave coming out of the ground next month or so and the flowers are easy enough to move.

The Hollyberry Lady 08-22-2010 11:05 AM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Wow Bob, that thing's got more berries than I initially thought it did! Looks great and thanks for finally showing us. So cool that some of the hollyberries are beginning to turn red for you. :ha:

My mom and I both agreed that it wouldn't be wise to stick your new shrub in a dark box for 5 or 6 days, when it is in the middle of turning completely red. So just like your other shrub before I sent it off, I buried it in my garden still in it's pot until it's ready to be mailed, when the ripening process is complete. Here she is now after a night of rain...

I've never seen a "Blue Princess" with so many fruits that are all ripening nearly simultaneously...

I bet you're super excited, eh?! I can't wait to send her to ya...

Here's a close-up shot of your hollyberries...

I think they'll be fully ripe by next weekend which is when I'm planning to ship her off to ya, Express Post...

HBL,

looks like the moonflower is gona bloom tonight. :)

Cool lookin hollyberry? :goteam:

The Hollyberry Lady 08-22-2010 01:03 PM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Actually Blake, that one already bloomed the day before, but a hard and steady downpour of rain last night beat the blooms down so they were all facing downward this morning! It looks like more will bloom tonight though, so I'm happy.

: )

Thanks again, Blake. What a great flowering plant that is. :goteam:

Here too Bob, is my "Magicberry" Holly ("Prince" & "Princess" in one pot) that I planted in the ground recently, by our back door where it can be seen everyday close-up...

A few berries, but certainly not like yours! In Spring I'll tease the roots apart and separate the male from the female, then I know they'll each perform way better.

Hope you like the garden shots of your new Hollyberry bush, Bob...

: )

Bob 08-22-2010 02:39 PM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

WOW!!!!:woohoonaner: is about all I can come up with to say HBL ! Every picture seems to be getting better than the next! I'm so thrilled that you got it and frankly was and am completely happy with the Blue boy/ girl combo you sent... I always wanted one and never did.... now I have two! If you don't get to attached to the new one in the groound. What I'm really looking forward to is seeing and maybe taking a few shots when the berries are bright red against a snow background when I think they're at there beautiful best.

THANKS:goteam:

The Hollyberry Lady 08-22-2010 02:53 PM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

I agree, they are absolutely stunning against a snowy background and this shrub of yours will be particularily gorgeous this winter. Just look at those berries!!!

: o

I think your Blue Boy/Girl bush is beautiful or I wouldn't have sent it, but your Princess takes the cake, doesn't she?

Hope you saw the "magicberry" shrub I just planted. I showed it a couple post previously. This is the one I was going to send you but aren't you glad now that you waited?! I sure am.

Yes, the pics are so pretty, and with so many fruits on your bush, she's so photogenic right now.

This is my Blue Girl, putting on lots of new soft growth right now...

She's still real young yet and not a lot of berries.

: )

Bob 08-22-2010 02:58 PM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

The magicberry is still nice withought the full crop of berries.. You're starting to worry me gloating over the Princess. Is it in the mail yet?

The Hollyberry Lady 08-22-2010 03:04 PM

I'm starting to worry myself!

I look out my window at your shrub and ask myself....Am I nuts?!

If it does make it to the post office, consider yourself one lucky bas*!@% :ha:

I do admit though, that it is something spectacular. :goteam:

So glad you love it, Bob.

Your fruits are really reddening up nicely this week, Bob. Just took this shot today...

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Hey, Holly Boy! :ha:

Are any of those fruits turning red yet?

I changed my mind...took out the "magicberry" shrub and moved it elsewhere. I wanted something very ornamental by the backdoor and decided to put my indoor beauty outside in it's place instead...

It's got tons of berries like yours Bob, but they're not all red yet...

My mom asked tonight...

why is it that Bob has Hollyberry shrubs nicer than The Hollyberry Lady?!

We laughed, but it's about the truth of the matter isn't it?! Then she was making cracks about calling you The Hollyberry Boy!!!

I couldn't resist getting yet another shrub this morning!

: o

They love me at this nursery and always knock off 10-15 bucks on $50 shrubs for me. I've only bought 4 of them from them this season!

It doesn't have half as many berries on it as our other ones, and it's a smallish shrub, but the one side has a few fruits...

I'll be planting it out tomorrow morning likely. Hope to see yours again soon, Bob...

Here's where I moved my "magicberry" Holly yesterday...

Also, here's some of your Hollyberries today Bob, still not quite fully ripened...

Would you mind if I mailed her next week? We don't want to interrupt this process so I think we should wait. They will all be red very soon as you can see. Can't wait to send her to you in a few days...

Thanks, Penny!

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Wow, Sherry, is that holly rather close to the concrete steps? We had a holly in our front bed that was over 8 feet wide and a good 7 feet tall. Of course, this was after a goodly number of years. :ha:

The Hollyberry Lady 08-31-2010 12:55 AM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Howard, this type is capable of reaching 15 feet!!!

I guess I was trying to mimic the look of the one my mom kept by our back door when I was a child, and it was close to the step but she kept it pruned regularily and it always had a beautiful shape to it. It stayed gorgeous, year after year, but always 4 by 4 feet tall and wide.

Holly shrubs make excellent hedge shrubs and take well to shearing and pruning if you desire to keep them on the smaller side, or a certain height or width...

This was my intention. I plan on letting it grow taller as opposed to wider. Maybe even shape it like a cone! :p

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

It's looking stunning and I hope you dont get too attached and make up some excuse........:ha:

Last chance.... I could come up with some good names too you know......?

The Hollyberry Lady 08-31-2010 08:51 PM

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

I really better mail it soon Bob, or you might never see it, other than pics in this thread!

Of course you know it's yours and I would mail it to save face alone...a lot of people have seen this thread. :ha:

You just better look after her though...

Any sign of neglect and I'll have to fly down to Jersey and repossess her! You best fertilize her weekly and pull off any yellowing or black leaves.

Pruning time for Holly is from May 1st through August31st. Give her a deep watering and heavy fertilizing in late Fall to sustain her over the cold months. Both "Princess" and "Girl" get very blue over the winter. You will never want any other Holly in your life, once you've experienced "Blue Princess".

Your shrub came with a one year warranty from Van Luuks nursery, which I think I mentioned, and it's guaranteed to thrive or they will replace it for up to a year!

: o

Hopefully I'll be able to part with her soon for ya, but I guess it will have a lot to do with these names you're thinking of calling me...

I think the "Peel Happy Plant Plucker" was enough, don't you?

Why you!

Alright Hollyberry Bob :ha:, let's see what you got...

It means so much Bob...

especially coming from the ARMPIT of America!!!

Isn't this what they call Jersey?! :ha:

Yeah, we know how often you post shots though...about once every six months!

Thought I'd wait until after the holiday Monday to mail her to ya Bob...

If you're lucky, that is...and also if Howard doesn't make me a offer I can't refuse!

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

Penny's right Bob...

and the shovel wouldn't just be for digging up the Hollyberry bush either, it'd also be used to bop you over the head with too!!! :ha:

That's what you'd get for neglecting my Holly!

Some of those fruits looked like they were turning red slightly in your last shot Bob...any recent pics?

Or will we have to wait until Christmas? :0521:

Did I tell you that Howard and Penny both made me offers on your shrub, Bob? Penny actually suggested splitting it down the middle and giving one half to Howard and the other half to her...

I'm considering it!

How much did you offer again, Penny? :ha:

This shot shows Hollyberry seeds...

There's always four seeds in one Hollyberry, and they need a cold stratification period of one year before they'll pop.

Re: Thank you Hollyberrylady!!!!

So how are your "Black Velvet Rose" hybrid Geraniums doing, Bob?

Here's a shot I took of one of mine this morning...

Thought since we each grew them from my seeds, this would be a good place to show shots of them too. Love to see yours also...

Gonna mail your Hollyberry shrub on Monday or Tuesday of next week, so you get it by Friday. It's nearly completely ripened now and although this shot came out kind of blurry, here it was this morning...

This is what we've been waiting for...red ripe berries. I can't wait to send her to you...
