Nah, I don't think you're really ready for her yet. Besides, she's in the middle of ripening...
![]() You wouldn't want to interrupt this wonderful process, now would you? As you can see, some of them are barely blushed with red yet... ![]() ![]() |

Well make it snappy , though it's probably best to let them ripen before it gets shipped( very soon!
)Here's the Blue boy/ girl in the garden today after some much needed rain. Some of the tips of the branches were pruned slightly. I doubt you'll be able to make it out in the pics but the first berries are just starting to turn an orange color while most are still green. If I ever get that Blue Princess I'm going to transplant it to this spot though so I can see it all the time.... not that I dont see all my plants all the time anyway ![]() It might look a little crowded but there's an E. Maurellii and a small variegated agave coming out of the ground next month or so and the flowers are easy enough to move. ![]() ![]() |

Wow Bob, that thing's got more berries than I initially thought it did! Looks great and thanks for finally showing us. So cool that some of the hollyberries are beginning to turn red for you.
![]() My mom and I both agreed that it wouldn't be wise to stick your new shrub in a dark box for 5 or 6 days, when it is in the middle of turning completely red. So just like your other shrub before I sent it off, I buried it in my garden still in it's pot until it's ready to be mailed, when the ripening process is complete. Here she is now after a night of rain... ![]() I've never seen a "Blue Princess" with so many fruits that are all ripening nearly simultaneously... ![]() I bet you're super excited, eh?! I can't wait to send her to ya... ![]() Here's a close-up shot of your hollyberries... ![]() I think they'll be fully ripe by next weekend which is when I'm planning to ship her off to ya, Express Post... : ) |

Actually Blake, that one already bloomed the day before, but a hard and steady downpour of rain last night beat the blooms down so they were all facing downward this morning! It looks like more will bloom tonight though, so I'm happy.
: ) Thanks again, Blake. What a great flowering plant that is. ![]() Here too Bob, is my "Magicberry" Holly ("Prince" & "Princess" in one pot) that I planted in the ground recently, by our back door where it can be seen everyday close-up... ![]() A few berries, but certainly not like yours! In Spring I'll tease the roots apart and separate the male from the female, then I know they'll each perform way better. Hope you like the garden shots of your new Hollyberry bush, Bob... : ) |

is about all I can come up with to say HBL ! Every picture seems to be getting better than the next! I'm so thrilled that you got it and frankly was and am completely happy with the Blue boy/ girl combo you sent... I always wanted one and never did.... now I have two! If you don't get to attached to the new one in the groound. What I'm really looking forward to is seeing and maybe taking a few shots when the berries are bright red against a snow background when I think they're at there beautiful best.THANKS ![]() |

I agree, they are absolutely stunning against a snowy background and this shrub of yours will be particularily gorgeous this winter. Just look at those berries!!!
: o I think your Blue Boy/Girl bush is beautiful or I wouldn't have sent it, but your Princess takes the cake, doesn't she? Hope you saw the "magicberry" shrub I just planted. I showed it a couple post previously. This is the one I was going to send you but aren't you glad now that you waited?! I sure am. Yes, the pics are so pretty, and with so many fruits on your bush, she's so photogenic right now. This is my Blue Girl, putting on lots of new soft growth right now... ![]() She's still real young yet and not a lot of berries. : ) |

Hey, Holly Boy!
![]() Are any of those fruits turning red yet? I changed my mind...took out the "magicberry" shrub and moved it elsewhere. I wanted something very ornamental by the backdoor and decided to put my indoor beauty outside in it's place instead... It's got tons of berries like yours Bob, but they're not all red yet... ![]() My mom asked tonight... why is it that Bob has Hollyberry shrubs nicer than The Hollyberry Lady?! We laughed, but it's about the truth of the matter isn't it?! Then she was making cracks about calling you The Hollyberry Boy!!! I couldn't resist getting yet another shrub this morning! : o They love me at this nursery and always knock off 10-15 bucks on $50 shrubs for me. I've only bought 4 of them from them this season! ![]() It doesn't have half as many berries on it as our other ones, and it's a smallish shrub, but the one side has a few fruits... ![]() I'll be planting it out tomorrow morning likely. Hope to see yours again soon, Bob... : ) |

Here's where I moved my "magicberry" Holly yesterday...
![]() Also, here's some of your Hollyberries today Bob, still not quite fully ripened... ![]() Would you mind if I mailed her next week? We don't want to interrupt this process so I think we should wait. They will all be red very soon as you can see. Can't wait to send her to you in a few days... : ) |

Wow, Sherry, is that holly rather close to the concrete steps? We had a holly in our front bed that was over 8 feet wide and a good 7 feet tall. Of course, this was after a goodly number of years.

Howard, this type is capable of reaching 15 feet!!!
I guess I was trying to mimic the look of the one my mom kept by our back door when I was a child, and it was close to the step but she kept it pruned regularily and it always had a beautiful shape to it. It stayed gorgeous, year after year, but always 4 by 4 feet tall and wide. Holly shrubs make excellent hedge shrubs and take well to shearing and pruning if you desire to keep them on the smaller side, or a certain height or width... This was my intention. I plan on letting it grow taller as opposed to wider. Maybe even shape it like a cone! ![]() : ) Last edited by The Hollyberry Lady : 08-31-2010 at 12:58 AM. |

I really better mail it soon Bob, or you might never see it, other than pics in this thread!
![]() Of course you know it's yours and I would mail it to save face alone...a lot of people have seen this thread. You just better look after her though... Any sign of neglect and I'll have to fly down to Jersey and repossess her! You best fertilize her weekly and pull off any yellowing or black leaves. Pruning time for Holly is from May 1st through August31st. Give her a deep watering and heavy fertilizing in late Fall to sustain her over the cold months. Both "Princess" and "Girl" get very blue over the winter. You will never want any other Holly in your life, once you've experienced "Blue Princess". Your shrub came with a one year warranty from Van Luuks nursery, which I think I mentioned, and it's guaranteed to thrive or they will replace it for up to a year! : o Hopefully I'll be able to part with her soon for ya, but I guess it will have a lot to do with these names you're thinking of calling me... I think the "Peel Happy Plant Plucker" was enough, don't you? Why you! Alright Hollyberry Bob , let's see what you got...: ) Last edited by The Hollyberry Lady : 08-31-2010 at 08:59 PM.
