I am new to Bromeliad and am having trouble finding good info. I have one that has 2 pups coming up. My question(s) is When do I remove the pups? How do I do it? I have read how to seperate banana pups, I am wondering if I do it the same way?

Hi Tom,

As for broms, I normally separate the pup when they have a couple of roots to the rhizome. On the other hand if the attaching rhizome is stout enough with the pup having sufficient leaves, I separate it too.
I find it interesting that as the pups are separated, the mother plant will have more pups till she dies. If left on, there is always lesser pups overall.

And yes, you can separate them in the same manner as you would with banana pups, just at a smaller scale - you don't need the shovel; a sharp knife will do the trick.

But why do you want to separate them? They make such lovely clumps if left to their own devices.

I thought you had to seperate the pups in order to get them to flower. The mother plant is fairly large and has flowered and is begining to fade.

No, you don't ever have to separate bromeliads unless you want to start a new colony, trade away or give away a plant, or the clump outgrows your space or your container.

The pups are taking energy from the mother plant as she fades away. That is her function now that she has bloomed, to give up her life to give the pups a good start. If it were me, I would leave the mother plant intact. As she disintegrates, remove the leaves when they will pull out easily until the entire mother plant is just gone.

Your pups will be stronger for leaving the mom there
