Many, about more than half I belive. But on the other side no way I can germinate Brahea Edulis-Guadalupe palm.

How to germinate palm seed. Get a bucket with lid.Put damp soil in bucket put in seed and cover with soil.Put lid on and forget about it.

Well I've gone 50 years swearing I'll never plant a palm tree in my yard, but it looks like I'm going to break down and plant a Butia capitata, aka Pindo Palm or Jelly Palm. The fruit is too good to pass on.

Some of you are probably familiar with Blue Jay birds. They like to store nuts for the winter, and if they can't find a suitable place they will just peck a hole in the ground and push them inside. Oh yes, they also forget about the seeds. So this is great for the acorns of the native oaks, but there were also palm trees in the town I grew up in. Every summer from kindergarten on it was my job to pull out the 100's of Washingtonia palm starts from our acre property. I began to look at palm trees as sources of trouble and nothing else. They were ok in a date orchard or a desert oasis. They still have no appeal to me as an ornamental plant. I like some dates and certainly my favorite fruit shake drink is date, and for that matter from Hadley's in Banning California. I've been selling the Zahidi date palm, the Pindo palm, and the Chilean Wine palm for a couple of years but never considered planting one ... until last weekend I had some dates from a customer of mine who feeds his plant appropriately. Wow. It changed my mind about that plant!

Zahidi are available here in the wholesale nursery trade. They are often planted in date orchards.

Palms do not tolerate high amounts of phosphate. Wholesale growers who raise palms for orchard sales typically feed their plants a citrus formula such as 30-10-20 or 28-8-18 until they are large enough to sell. A standard dosage is 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 cc) per gallon of water in continuous feed; i.e., the fertilizer is always in the water irrigation water to the plants.

However, date orchards and collectors of ornamental palms (including botanical gardens) do not want rapid growth. Here is the formula they use:

Major Nutrients (% by weight):
Nitrogen 18.0%, Phosphate 6.0%, Potash 18.0%
Nitrogen components: Ammoniacal 7.0%, Nitrate 11.0%.

Secondary and Micro Nutrients:
Boron 0.02%, Copper 0.05%, Iron 0.25%, Manganese 0.065%, Magnesium 1.1%, Molybdenum 0.0005%, Sulfur 1.5%, Zinc 0.05%.

Botanical gardens and palm collectors use about 0.4 lbs per plant per year. Date orchards will use 1 teaspoons (5 cc) per 5 gallons of water in continuous feed during the active growing season.
