Re: Garden2021
Just stick 'em in the dirt ... give some water when you think about it and the dirt is dry (this always helps). And wait 80 to 100 days for nuts to grow. The peanut bush makes a nice looking thick lush dark green bush 18" tall. It can be used as a hedge row (each side of the driveway or fence ???) or ground cover around the base of a tree. The bonus is you can harvest fresh nuts for roasting; boiling; or making your own peanut butter and have the left over dried bush (straw) as mulch. ....Peanut straw was bailed and used as winter animal feed by farmers (oh my aching back from that memory) A lot grocery stores will have local fresh peanuts in the early summer (or fall). You may have time to plant those. ... Peanuts are usually planted without the hull but will grow if you leave the hull on the nut (just takes a little longer to germinate). Oh, oh .... since peanuts is a legume and fixes nitrogen into the soil, it would be a great companion plant for bananas. .... hummm .... nitrogen for the bananas; winter mulch for the mat; AND HOMEMADE PEANUT BUTTER & HOMEGROWN BANANAS FOR YOU. Re: Garden2021
A few garden pics ... closeups .... and garden details ...
Today the corn is shoulder/head high: One of the Squash plant in bloom. We'll be eating squash soon. The cabbage is heading up. Two of these are about 3 or 4 lbs now. These are 2 more plantings a few weeks behind these. One of the tomato plants. It's about 10" tall and I'll have to start staking these soon. I have 65 plants that survived transplanting and growing well. About 25 or 30 plants didn't survive. Also, I have some backup plants in the greenhouse for later planting. A closeup of the garlic These are rutabagas, turnips and mustard greens. They are not big but they are ready to start eating. The turnip roots are slightly smaller than a golf ball and will get much bigger. ... Also to the left are volunteer Zinnias growing. The tiller cut down anything in the row middles and these are the one left in the row furrow. There 3 more rows I'll be planting flowers in soon. These are the Sunflowers (100 ft row). And, to the left are Pineapples in the pots. There are 5 pineapples growing. If you zoom in you might be able to see a couple of those. Also not pictured are peppers, potatoes, eggplant, cucumber, and okra. AND, the 5 rows of corn planted last Saturday broke ground this morning. Last edited by edwmax : 05-05-2021 at 03:36 PM. |

And Humming Birds! ..... I also have a pair of Red Crested Woodpeckers that showed up this year. I not sure if they are setting up a nest in the pine tree at the end of the garden or have one near by in the woods. Anyway, I haven't seen the wood peckers for the last couple of years. |

Re: Garden2021
Holy cow!! That is a huge space, I am not sure I wouldn't call what you have going on a farm. I am super impressed with how much work you have done! You mentioned you are growing for one early on in the thread, so are you doing all the work yourself too? Very, very impressive!!!

Anything less than a 1000 acres is just hobby farming around here. This garden is a little under 1/2 acre. Yes, I've done all the work myself. I only work a couple of hours in the mornings while I'm still drinking my coffee. .... It's amazing no one wants to help but sure do want the greens, corn, and tomatoes. |

Re: Garden2021
I cut the 2nd head of cabbage for supper tonight; steamed it with a little salt; cooked a package of creamed corn (from last year's garden); and cooked some fish sticks (the good ones with real fish in them) in the air fryer; .... damn the cabbage was good with just a little butter on it, melt in your mouth, and eat almost the whole head ... The corn and the fish sticks were good too. .... A quick Monday night supper ....

Re: Garden2021
Photo Update of the Garden:
The corn is standing about 8 to 10 ft tall. The first tassel was a last week and today I can see 6 or 7 tassels open. I expect all will open this coming week. The onions are starting to fill out. The squash & potatoes. ... I eat the 1st two squash for supper last night. The cabbage, lots of heads ready to pick and getting bigger. The broccoli and tomatoes are growing now. I have to stake the tomatoes soon. The sunflowers and Zinnias. A number of the Zinnias didn't come up. I'll have to replant some of those. The 2nd planting of Corn. These were planted about 2 weeks ago and now 8" tall. I just finished the 1st application of fertilizer. The Garlic and some Tomatoes on the back rows. One of the Zinnias: Surprise .... These two Sunflowers opened this Morning and a few other are open too. these will get showy soon. |

Sorry for the hazy pics. I thought it was sun glare, but the phone lens needed wiping off.

Re: Garden2021
Looking great! Most folks up here don't even start planting most things until next week.
That area looks remarkably weed free and I don't see any irrigation lines - how are you watering it?

haha ... look closer. Pics 3, and 6 has the sprinklers; pic 10 (last one) the green garden hose can be seen as well as new 1" pvc pipe that I'm putting in. There are 4 stand sprinkler 45 ft apart in the center of the garden; and this year I've added 4 sprinklers on the West side of the garden. I also have another 4 ready to put on the east side. .... I'm a little slow, but I bought 600 ft of 1" PVC pipe last month to put sprinklers on the east & west sides of the garden. I will leave the center line on the garden hose for now. ... I've also bought a pressure booster pump to boost the water pressure to 60 psi. So currently there are 8 sprinklers to cover the garden. .... The sprinklers are absolutely necessary as small plants will die or seeds will burn up in the soil when the top 2" drys out in the hot South Georgia sun before they get the roots 3" or 4" down. It is not unusual to be running the sprinkler even if it rained the day before. I am having trouble growing beets for this very reason. I've replanted the okra 3 times and not sure if this was because of bad seeds or dry soil when the seed germinated.. Last edited by edwmax : 05-18-2021 at 08:56 PM. |

Re: Garden2021
As for the weeds, I run the tiller through the garden once a week to hoe out any weeds starting to grow and keep the soil soft & airy. ... And during this past winter, I tilled the garden area every 2 or 3 weeks to keep the weeds from growing and producing seeds. In the long run, this will reduce the weed load in the garden without using herbicides. ... I can already see an over-all difference.
