Most of the vegges planted, greens, cabbage, & onions, will grow in soil temps of mid 40s plus and normal planting time is late January thru February. Corn needs a soil temp of upper 50s & mid 60s to start growing. Today's soil temp @ 2" is 80 deg. .... An Old Farmer's saying is to plant corn when the new leaves of oak trees are the size of squirrel's ears. The leaves are the size of a nickle now. .... Anyway the problem was all the rain in February. With the dry-out and clear sunny days for the past 2 weeks, the 2" soil temps were at mid 60s last week. So I chanced planting corn last week, 3 weeks early, knowing we can get thought a light spring cold front should one move south.
Tomatoes and peppers are a different story. They are in the greenhouse & not ready to set out yet; and they will not tolerate frost. I'm shooting to set those out in April. Hopefully no frost after April 1st; But I have seen 4/6" snow in MAY here. .... Yes, we got a major growing season if there are no more cold snaps this spring and one has to take a chance to make good on mild temps. Last edited by edwmax : 03-18-2021 at 09:10 PM. |

Pictures ....
Small garden: the garlic has fatten out and doing well. One thing I learned is that garlic and onion need irrigation. Their roots are shallow and sensitive to the top 2 inches of soil drying on sunny days. ![]() Main garden, east side: The first 5 rows on the right is corn. It's about 4" - 5" tall now. I side dressed it with 10-10-10 fertilizer this past Monday. The next 3 rows left of the corn are okra (2 rows) and squash & cucumber (1 row). I'm still waiting on these to come up. .... The cucumber should already be up, so I'm doing a germination test on the seed. I'll be getting some new squash seed later today anyway. ![]() Main Garden- West side: The first 4 rows from the left are Sunflower (1 row), zinnias (3 rows); then a row of cabbage. Then next 5 rows with the bolting greens will be replanted with broccoli, tomatoes, and peppers in April 2nd Section of the garden: The 2 left rows with green plants about 1 1/2" tall are turnips & rutabagas (5 empty rows to the left of those); then a row of mustard; the next 2 rows are just staring to come up are beets and collards; next row (right of the collards) are onions. .... The onions are starting to show signs of growing. They sensitive to drying of the top 2" of soil and need irrigation every day .... as well as the other newly germinated plants with shallow roots. ![]() Last edited by edwmax : 03-25-2021 at 10:14 AM. |

Everyone wants to eat my vegetables but no one is around when there is fun work to be done. ....???????.....
Yesterday, I popped a row of old turnips out of the ground with a fork and let dry for a couple of hours so the dirt will shake off. Then loaded them on the wagon to move them to the compost pile. This was to get the row ready to plant tomatoes and peppers in a week or two. ![]() turnips any one???? ![]() I'll take out the mustard & collard greens later. If the mustard seeds develop in time time, I'll try saving some for planting this fall. Oh, ... it's about time ... we got a little rain yesterday afternoon and again early this morning. Yesterday I ripped out the remaining mustard and collards and prepped the rows for planting. By last night I had planted another row of cabbage, and a row each of broccoli and tomatoes. Early this morning I finished the tomatoes row and planted a row of peppers ( jalapeno, anathema, Joe Parker, poblano, and cayenne) and the eggplants before it started raining (at 9 am). .... Getting the plants watered in ... and the plants looks happy they are out of the green house
Last Saturday I planted a row of potatoes (Yukon gold) and replanted the okra on Tuesday. Pictures as soon as the weather clears and there is good sunlight. Last edited by edwmax : 04-09-2021 at 09:57 AM. |

Actually, I have a tractor (Ford 3000). It needs some repairs that I've been putting off. .... When plants get about knee high you can't use a tractor to plow the weeds anyway. .... And with the sprinklers next to the collards and the rows to be worked in the center of the garden, a tractor can't get in there to work the soil. The tractor is only good for breaking the ground in the spring; laying-off the rows; and mowing down the bushes in the fall. A front tine tiller works GREAT. The tiller is almost like working a mule & plow (& I have). Just the tiller wont quit at 5pm and go to the barn whether you want to or not. ....hahaha |

Sorry I've been busy last week and this week. I bought PVC pipe and a pressure booster pump to rebuild the irrigation system. The booster pump is working with the garden hoses for now and is doing GREAT. .... Also Sunday after the BIG rain we had I found the garden was over run with flea beetles. The beetle were so thick it looked like I kicked over a fire ant mound. So I've had to clean & repair the sprayers. Then spraying pesticide to get the beetles under control. .... There were so many beetles I saw 2 of my bigger cabbage plants just disappear in front of my eyes. ..... well almost ....
I took this pics last Friday (4/23) Pic of the garlic ![]() Pic of the flowers and cabbage ..... the new PVC on the left ![]() Pic of the corn ... these were waist high at the time ![]() The corn is now (today) chest high. I believe the corn will start tasseling in about 10 or 12 days and Roast Ears (corn of the cob for you city slickers) should be ready to eat 2 weeks later. ..... ![]() I get another picture of the corn tomorrow to show how much it has grown in 5 days. |

Oh last week I planted russet potatoes, yukon gold (yellow) potatoes, and red potatoes. I'm trying to sprout sweet potato slips; these are not available. Hopefully I can plant those the end of May or 1st week of June.

Today's pics
The flowers & cabbage ![]() Another of the cabbage ![]() Tomatoes & Peppers .... the rain nearly drowned those. ![]() Corn @ 36" plus ![]() and the Garlic bed .... the garlic is 24"tall over all and 2" dia at the soil line. The number of leaves are the wrappers of the bulb. ![]() Last week I made a bed around a Crape Myrtle tree 10ft x 20ft. This morning I planted PEANUTS there since I work for "peanuts' anyway. The peanuts should be self sowing each year since the nuts are in the ground and come back each spring. |

I planted the 2nd section of corn this morning. I started just before 8am and finished at 9:15am tilling 5 row forrows & seeding 2rows of white / 3 rows of yellow corn. This planting should be ready to eat by August 1st.
Yesterday I cut the 1st head of cabbage to make a simple cold slaw for supper. It was good ..... yummm... . |
