Can ya show us the leaves? Then we can tell what it is with certainty...

I just noticed you have it labelled as a tulip in your gallery. The petals and especially the center look very tulip-ish. Bet it was real nice when it was fresh.

If you get a chance to show the leaves, we can identify it correctly for sure...

Yeah, it's a tulip. I hadn't meant to put the name of it in the gallery. It was very pretty, and opened up like that in about 10 minutes.
My wife runs the operating room at a local hospital, and recently became a patient there as well. She was rescuing a stray cat and, after a stop at the vet's, brought it home. When it got out of the carrier, it paniced, and started to climb the bookcase. In attempting to get it down, my wife got hooked on her hands. A day and a half later, her hands were all swollen, and there was severe pain. She went to the ER, to have them looked at, and they admitted her. The cuts had gotten infected, and she had a fever of 102°F. While she was in, her OR crew sent her some flowers. When she was being released, she asked me to take the flowers home. I had parked my van in 96° heat. I turned the air conditioning on immediately, but it took a few minutes to cool down, and in the ten minute trip home, the tulip opened up completely like that.

Wink Re: Does anyone know what this is?

Sorry to hear about your wife John and I hope she'll be alright. That sure is a lovely tulip though. I want some like that.

Here were some of mine this past Spring...

Thanks, HBL. The tulips, in the bouquet, looked like yours, when I put them in the truck. Ten minutes later, they were fully opened and completely flat.

Intense heat makes tulips wilt, shrivel, and die prematurely. To make them last longer indoors, keep them in a cool room and out of direct sunlight.

I think the heat and then the sudden coolness is what made the tulip react and open like that. Kinda neat, though.

Are your wife's hands ok now, John? Bet you're hoping so...so she can continue cooking and doing your laundry for you!

Seriously though, I sure hope she's ok...
