Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?

Be careful where you plant it, it can be quite invasive. I have seen yards taken over by it.
I used to grow purple sugarcane, I got mine from a grower in Hawaii. I thought I had pics of it in my gallery but I cant find them.
I distributed many cuttings.
As it gets older the nodes will grow aerial roots, just cut that stalk down once it gets very old, and cut it up with a hacksaw, put each section in soil and it will form a new plant.

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?

I have grown sugarcane for a few decades both on O'ahu and here on the 'Big Island'. I use it as a windrow as well as the leaves for mulch. I also like to chew on it or cut the culm into slices and stick it into a cup of hot coffee or tea and avoid having to use processed sweeteners.

When I have a lot of it (due to the 'invasiveness' posted by another member, I cut it and trade it with a goat owner up the road who gives me fresh goat milk in exchange! WONDERFUL!!!

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?

As a kid we'd buy sugar cane in the autumn around Halloween at the farmers' market. What we didn't eat I'd cut into lenghts with 3 or 4 joints (nodes), and bury them just under the surface of the soil. This seemed to keep them warm enough and moist. In the spring we'd dig them up and replant them in rows in the garden. When the soil became the right tempature they'd sprout along the nodes and grow into beautiful plants during the summer. In the fall we'd cut them and start over.

That's north Florida, zn 8b.

Russell: I was in Central Florida for 2 years in '04 and '05 and grew sugarcane there in Ellenton which is just a few miles from the southeast shore of Tampa Bay. It grew very well.

Your method of planting...horizontally with 2 or 3 nodes in a couple of inches of soil is the way I always do it. I have quite a lot of it now and am giving it away to others on this island so that they can plant it and grow their own as a food and energy source or just for ornamental purposes.

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?

I can attest that Sugar Cane is rewarding to grow, and when it gets warm out, it can grow almost like corn! I would not be without it for the aforementioned reasons, including using it as the best sweetener for sun tea. Cut the pulp and put it out with the jar in the sun, and you have the best tasting sun tea ever.

I do offer it in 4" pots at my nursery, but I'm afraid I cannot import the plants overseas. However, if you do purchase it, make sure you confirm that the one you get is edible. I'd also recommend buying it rooted, because some people have a tough time trying to root sections, depending on the time of year and the maturity of the stalk.

Good luck, and you won't be sorry!

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?

I have some. It's kind of a pain in the greenhouse overwintering it, the edges of the leaves are very sharp and will cut you like a knife if you drag your arm through it. It is easy to overwinter potted as long as it's at least 50 degrees where you're overwintering it.

That's a cool idea, I'm going to have to give this a try. And I think I'll bury some for spring too. I haven't thought much about it in years, but sugar cane really is a pretty ornamental grass.

I have been looking for a good stateside source for a while now for cane (short of finding a plantation in the south and "borrowing" a cane but that wouldn\'t be the ethical nor condoned way to go.
And for you Bob! The sell chunks of cane and unprocessed cane sugar online and in most grocery stores that you can use to make rum........

Is there anything left of the root system or even a small shoot? It can be replanted in a different spot.

Check out Stokes tropicals. They are in Louisiana as well and they may have starts. They've been
in business a long time and if they don't have purple can I'm pretty sure that they will be able to
get it for you.

It should recover. If you are going to have frost again, cover it overnight. I wish I could send you some culms as I have loads of it as windrow around my property but the USDA will not permit shipments from here to the 'states'!

Aloha and good luck!

I think in the spring, I'm going to get some of this var. of Saccharum:
Shaman Australis Botanicals

Violaceum looks very beautiful, but one thing I've read about it is that it's not quite as hardy as other officinarums, so I might even have to overwinter it in a GH. :/
Maybe its' worth it, if it looks like that.

Curious if anyone has grown it and if it's as sweet as other var's?

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?

Hey!

I'm in the sugar business as well!
Last week on Monday I received two cuttings of sugarcane from the Canary Islands. I got it from Canarius in Tenerife.
I put it in water on a heat mat at temps around 30° C and just after about 5 - 6 days roots started to show. I will put it in soil now and let sit another week or so on the heat mat. Then it'll go to the green house at the weekend after temps have hopefully risen to spring weather!
I got a purple cane with yellow stripes and yellow cane.

BB73 03-27-2011 02:32 AM

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?

Here's an update two weeks later:
I put it in pot and it continued to grow. The heat mat was just on at night. During the days it was warm enough. Very easy to grow that stuff - I hope it'll continue that way!

Im also trying to grow some sugar cane! I got some from the store and Im trying to root them in water by a very sunny and warm window. I think roots are starting to grow on one of them now. Once roots begin to show Im going to pot it up horizontally and let it take off! I have purple sugar cane.
Great pics everyone!
