Default What is specific name for "Red Banana"?

Hi, I just happened to find small red bananas at Giant Eagle in Pitt the other day! I bought 3 just out of curiosity, waited till they got softer and darker red (almost black) and we ate them! Wow they were so good, can someone help me with a name; they were dark red-brown with sweet kind of golden fruit inside. I should have taken pics but they were about 4 1/2" with very similar shape to regular yellow from grocery store.

That is the first none Dole banana I have ever tastes, now I'm curious to try more varieties!

Carla

Yeah, I like the red bananas too. They have more flavor than regular bananas and I always tasted a little raspberry note in there too. If you can find the 'baby' bananas, those are very good as well. Those are about the only kinds you can find anywhere here (gran nain (dole/chiquita), red, baby and plantains) unless I go to the asian grocery store, where I've found a few others from time to time.

Like shown above, there's many red varieties but I believe if you got them from the store, they're Cuban Reds. Sadly no store out here carries 'em.

When I was in St. Louis, I had a really tough time finding non-generic bananas. I could occasionally find them at 'fancy' grocery stores (basically regular grocery stores in wealthy neighborhoods that have better selection). Fortunately, back here in Iowa, HyVee (our local midwest grocery store) tends to carry both red and baby bananas at most locations (in addition to the ubiquitous plantains and regular gran nain).

I don't know if you have a Piggly Wiggly in your area, but the one in our area carries the reds.

Harris teeters and food lions carry them as well here. They are very good sweet tasting. Cuban red like what was said.

They are definitely not Cubans or Morados, these bananas do not have a similar shape to a regular grocery store yellow banana.
