we are having:

black-eyed peas with smoked hamhocks, fried taters, green beans, corn bread, and some collards if i can find some. and i might even make a banana cake. i love new years!

We had an old woman and man come over and ask for some Collards for Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve. They took quite a haul and gave us only $2...psh

It was their tradition to go get fresh collards from a garden somewhere in the neighborhood versus the grocery store. They were nice but I mean...They could've paid up a little more. Nice to help out though.

We'll have the kids and grandkids over and put some steaks on the grill. Probably baked potatoes, salad and garlic bread. Don't know about dessert yet but it'll probably be a couple blackberry cobblers you buy frozen at the store and pop in the oven with vanilla ice cream spooned over top.

We are making a Creole shrimp appetizer, and a seared Ahi salad served with a Japanese Miso dressing, then some See's chocolates for desert. Oh and let's not forget the Pink Champagne! Maybe later a shot of very smokey mescal and a Cuban cigar! MM...MM....MMM

Well I don't know what seared Ahi is, but I remember See's Candy from my childhood!

Ahi is a steak cut from a Yellowfin Tuna. Usually you sear it in sesame oil after it's been marinated. It's like cooked fish on the outside and Sashimi in the middle. I like it enough to eat it but my wife totally loves it.

Ok.. I had to look up what Sashimi was also! LOL I've never had raw anything but with the right dipping sauce I could probably do it!

If you ever have the chance to visit a Sushi bar I highly recommend it. Usually people who have never been seem to like the Spicy Tuna roll, California roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll. They also sell cooked food, and if they have it that night the Yellowtail Collar is yummy! After you get the taste for it you'll want to try some Sashimi (straight raw fish with no rice) My faves are Yellowtail, Black Snapper, and Toro (a fatty cut of Bluefin tuna). Spider Roll (deep fried soft shell crab) if done properly is awesome too! Ahh the list is endless, I'm getting hungry just typing about it! Remember that the little pile of light green mashed potato looking stuff is Wassabi. Exercise extreme caution when mixing it with your soy sauce! It will make your head feel like it's going to explode for few seconds. Oh and try to get a seat at the bar so you see the chef work his magic!

wassabi...yummy yummy yummy! i love it!!!! ahi is ssuppossed to be very tasty. mahi mahi is suppossed to be tasty( it just looks too much like a dolphin)...good gracious i need to move back to the ocean..fried soft shell crab..uuummmmm.i missed soft shell season again last year. this is bad, my jaws are starting to tingle. the year we moved back to fl. i had my first taste of shark steak..and my first tast of sword fish steaks.. that year for new years we had a low country boil..and the shark steaks, sword fish steaks( all the steaks we put on the grill), shrimp, craw fish, summer sausage, new potatoes, crab, and alaskan crab legs, mini corn on the cobbs...it was so good i can still taste it. i think what makes it worse is that you can get everything listed above, except for the soft shell crab, here but its FROZEN. there is nothing worse then a frozen shark steak..( theres nothing worse then frozen sea food anyway)unless its cooked in tennessee then they over cook it and crab legs are suppossed to snap when you crack them not bend in a soggy mess of gooo. even the craw fish are cooked and frozen. yucky

We've {me&DH] have had so many parties. This year we're just gonna chill. And we are!
I remember my mama cooking a geat big meals always for thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.
Well this one particular New Years alotta years ago when i was a lil' gal, my mama cooked alot of food again for our New Years. She cooked and cooked, and re-checked the food. I know cuz i was following her everywhere{got on her nerves actually} I was a inquisitive lil' gal ya know. We lived in Connecticut then. Anyway.......Fore' you know it Daddy walked in with 4 squirrels he trapped and killed. Us kids were fascinated.
Daddy proceeded to skin them and get them ready for the pot. We were watching his every move. Daddy got the hyde off, then took out the guts. Us kids were watching, fascinated by this!{Ya know daddy was the greatest}
He put them skinned and gutted squirrel bodies in the roaster,fully seasoned, and us kids waited and watched. Everytime daddy got up to check the meat, us kids got up to check right along beside him.
It finally came time to EAT! Boy oh boy! Mama set the table for our New Years feast with turkey,pig feet,a ham, greens, sweet potatoes, black eye peas{for good luck} stuffing, sponge cake, banana pudding{for every occasion}, tea, you name it , we had it! It was beautiful.
The most beautiful part for us kids, is when daddy took the cooked and seasoned squirrels out the oven! We all were in heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Except our Mama.
We devoured the squirrels!! Us children Did'nt touch any meat but the squirrels. There was nothing left of them. OOH our Mama was mad!~
Everytime New Years comes...........I remember my Daddy and his fine meal!

Mitchel I told my husband of your discription of what's on the menu at a sushi bar. We'll try one sometime and I'll tell you about it. Thanks for the heads up on the green mashed potatoes! My daughter's ex-boyfriend was Vietnamese and I learned how to cook some of his family's favorite dishes.. the biggest being Pho and that meat started out raw but cooked in the hot broth to like a rare slice of steak. You've probably eaten that, I hear it's gotten very popular. I've never been exposed to Japanese food though.
