The only banana I know will come back in zone 7 is basjoo.

What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more. |

Re: Which Ornamentals Will Come Back in Zone 7
I live in 7b (right on the edge of 7a). I have basjoo, itinerans, sikkimensis, and ornata. I had velutina but it got crowded out by other plants. I had balbisiana for a few years but lost it...probably when we had zone 6 cold. I've had Musella lasiocarpa a few times but it seems to die after a few years...maybe just its lifespan (survived cold winters but died after a warm winter). I think it helps a lot to get them established iver two growing seasons with a mild winter in between and it's always a good idea to cut them down after frost and put mulch over them to keep them through the winter. I had Orinoco for a few years and Raja Puri but since I wasn't willing to dig them up and overwinter them in the house I never got fruit and decided that basjoo would be just as good. I just didn't mulch them and eventually lost them. I've even had a few mild winters where I managed to overwinter Ensete maureleii but that's always just a crap shoot.

Musa Bordelon - I'll have to try that next Spring. Nice pics! I like the color and size.
