Anyone have any first hand experience on vegetable seed germination using aspirin...
About ready to start my veggie growing and told to crush up aspirin in the water I use for my seeds by my father in law. Found a few things about it online but wanted to see if anyone here has fist hand experience. Thanks, Martin

Interesting. I'm guessing it has to do with it breaking down with water from its main form, acetyl-salycilic acid to release one of its constituents, salycilic acid...which is used as a wart remover. So maybe the salycilic acid helps break down the outer shell of the seed for improved germination rates. I'd be worried it would hurt the young sprouts though...but who knows. If anyone has more info on this, I would be interested to hear it.

Well I used Crushed aspirin in the water for my seeds like I was told when I first watered them in my seed trays and I had 100% germination. I did more research and I guess the Salicylic acid is what helps.
Aspirin For Your Plants? Try it! I also got an organic fertilizer for the seedlings to use after sprouting. Its a Fish/kelp mixture with micro nutrients and I have to say I am impressed with it. That stuff really works. I noticed a difference in the plants within 24 hours. I am going to have to use it for my veggies on a regular schedule!

Sure is!
Oh don't be mistaken I am in not trying to go 100% organic... I'm just experimenting with various tips I have been given.

Actually, I was being facetious, aspirin is a natural chemical that comes from the willow tree--it can be made synthetically--like fertilizer.

ya I know I used to take white willow bark for inflammation in my knee when I was younger... it worked much better than a prescription I was given that made me feel odd.
but I did not catch the facetiousness. Not sure who is captain organic or not on the internet so ya know... haha I am all for trying to use as little chemicals as possible especially pesticides when I can, but my number one goal is to get everything to grow so me and the kids can eat it! ![]()

I typically start my seeds on a moist paper towel on a plate covered with plastic wrap and get pretty close to 100% germination. Once the roots are showing I transfer them to my potting media.

Cool, I will have to give that a try next year with a few things. Must be a lot of work when growing lots of carrots though...
I couldn't imagine having transfer the 300 seeds I planted from paper towels.

True! Even worse with turnips! LOL No, I mainly use that for seeds like tomato, pepper, broccoli and cabbage that you need to grow up and transplant.

I have wanted to try aspirin to aid in rooting cuttings. People have long used "Willow Water" for this, and the scientific name for willow is Salix. Perhaps, if the aspirin works like willow water for rooting cuttings, it might also help in germination of seeds. The link Martin provided even mentions watering growing plants with aspirin water. There are many different recipes for making willow water, which range from soaking pieces of willow for a given period to actually boiling pieces of the stem. Here's a recipe from Martha Stewart:

I would think it probably doesn't do much until right as the seed starts the germinating process...
