Wilting Banana getting worse
Hi Guys,
I posted a picture of a new basjoo i am overwintering inside a few months ago - I was told at the time it looked very healthy, but it has got prgressively worse to the point where it now needs the cane again to even stand up on its own. I cant figure out whether i have over or underwatered it, or if thats even the issue? I didnt water it at all for 3 weeks or so as the soil was still damp at 5cm down, and only did so once this part was dry. ANn help would be massively appreciated! Pictures added. |

Re: Wilting Banana getting worse
Too many photos to wade through to find the ones you refer to. Post these with your question. The links are given under each image. ....Also put your location & grow zone in your profile. I'm not going to hunt this info every time to make relevant comments to your questions.

Re: Wilting Banana getting worse
It looks wet to me, is that pot draining well? The plant will slow in growth or go dormant this time of year. Too much water will rot the roots, if it's not drying out you may need to change to a better draining soil mix. You can cut off the leaves if they get bad. The game is to keep it alive until better weather. Mine get very little water through the winter season. The one's I store bare root get no water from October till the middle of May.

Re: Wilting Banana getting worse
Thanks for posting the pics. .... The pots are tooo small and only a little more than half full of soil. The plant has to be root bound and any water poured in just runs out the bottom. ... Re pot to 16 or 18 inch pot with a mix of 50% potting spoil & 50% perlite. This is a fast drain mix, but it still holds some water without drowning the roots. ... Let the potting soil dry out between watering. .... If the plant feels any temps below 50 deg F they might go into dormancy. Otherwise they should grow near normal, but slow, though the winter.
Note these young plants still have their 1sr leaves. This is normal and the plant has not been stressed. Growing bananas in containers is hard to do. So you have to watch them close. |

Re: Wilting Banana getting worse
I apologize ... I clicked on the thumb pic in your profile and went to the gallery slide show instead of your gallery. Then spent 30 minutes looking for your last pics. I ran out of patients looking for them. ... But simply posting the images with your comments is much faster and clearer for readers.

Re: Wilting Banana getting worse
Thank you both for your replies. The pot isnt wet at the top, but when i removed it from the pot the bottom of the soil was damp still (from water given 3 weeks ago), so sounds like ive overwatered yes.
The pots are 10" high and only the top 1" doesnt have soil in, but im very happy to repot it Yes it does still have some of its first leaves, we've only removed the 3 on the pseudo stem as they died off as larger leaves came out (just as our outdoor plants did). We're planning on planting in march and it will live permanantly outdoor from spring 2021 onwards - our other Bananas dont seem to mind the winter here, as it only gets down to about -5C at the coldest - They lose their leaves after the first heavy frost but simply start growing again in the spring. Our oldest Basjoo is about to go through it's 3rd winter, and its about 9' tall at present, although it stopped growing much as we let it grow it's suckers this year just gone |
