Banana Seed Germination Forum As one of the toughest seeds in the plant kingdom to figure out the keys to germination success with, this is a forum with banana seed germination tips. Please entitle posts like "Musa balbisiana," or "Musa cheesmani," etc. People would then post a reply under that heading, sharing their germination successes (and failures), what materials and methods they used, germination percentage, etc.

Default Ensete perrieri and Musa Daj Giant seeds

I started a bunch of seeds end mid Sept, and some more in Oct. Ensete Glaucum, Ensete Perrieri, Musa Intinerans, Musa Formosana, Musa Daj Giant among some others. I started most of them in ziplock bags, which is how I had started all of mine in years past. I did started a few recently in plastic deli containers (Daj, Formosana and soem Glaucum). The rest were in bags.

I alternated the heat on the Daj Giant (in a deli box) with a seed mat, and about 3 weeks ago noticed one of them sprouted. I had most of the other seeds in bags. Some of the bags I began to neglect well over a month ago as I was busy putting away things outside, and really to be honest I ignored them and threw them aside. Off the heat mat. I looked at them a couple weeks ago, thinking I might toss them as I needed room for pots. Then I noticed roots in one of the bags, turned it around to see which one it was, and the name on the bag was Ensete Perrieri. I was kinda shocked to say the least, considering I had heard how difficult it is to germinate and I really literally threw it in a corner. BUT, maybe it isn't the real deal??? It took less then 30 days to germinate, I don't remember the source, and I still have time to kill it, along with the Daj. I assume there is no way to verify it until it puts some size on? Anway I just thought I would share a seed story.

Hi Eric,

Was the perrieri seed's coat warty or tuberculous? If so they are perrieri seeds.
Is it possible to have later on a small dried leaf sample of it for DNA analyses?

Best wishes,

Markku.

Hi Tony,
Thanks! However your seed is not E.perrieri. It is smooth and nor warty like in the attached photo.
Best wishes,
Markku.

Hi Markku!

Yes it is tuberculous, not warty at all. Pretty smooth. It is slightly smaller than E Glaucum, but is not that or E Vent. It is funny you just posted about this because I pulled one of the non germinated seeds out last night and looked at it. I suspect it is an Ensete Superbum India, or is it Thai, well which ever of the two has the bigger of the seeds. After you ID Jeff's plant as a Superbum, and his mix up with the seeds being sold as Perrieri, I have a feeling there was a bunch of seeds sold as Perrieri on the market that were really Superbums. And I have a feeling this was part of that batch. Anway this is what I was able to piece together from all of my research.

If you would still like a piece of dried leaf when it gets a little bigger just let me know Markku and I'll get it to you!

Hi Eric,

E.Suberbum seeds are smooth and some 5 mm in diameter (about half in size to comparing to E.glaucum).
Markku.

Thanks Markku!

That sounds exactly like the seed. Size and texture are almost exact. And it grows fast with heat and humidity.
