Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

Just wanted to get some idea as to the number of people interested in a Tissue Culture workshop put on by Carol Stiff's organization - Kitchen Culture Kits.

We are planning to hold it in Las Vegas and were thinking of March. We need to determine how many would likely attend. They usually cost about $100-115 per person for the workshop including all materials, supplies, lunch and so on.

This is lower if some of the expense can be reduced. I will host the workshop in my office, shuttle the instructor back and forth to the airport and perhaps get her motel room 'comped' by a casino. If you belong to any gardening or orchid clubs, spread the word and let me know how many can make it. The more people we have, the lower the cost....so please encourage all you can.

I haven't asked him yet, but Pauly (damaclese) is a chef by trade, so we will have a great lunch that is much better and less expensive than a catered box lunch (if he will consent to preparing it for us.)

Carol said that she would do 2 workshops if need be to accomodate everyones schedule. I would think we can set it up for a Saturday.

If you have ever wanted to learn about micropropagation TC'ing, now is your chance. Should March be bad timing, please give us your input on an alternate time frame and Carol will do her best to make it happen. We could have it before the end of the year too.

May have to find out what interest would be in this part of the country.

I think would be interesting to attend!!

Argh,....I would really like to be there,...but I'm from the Netherlands,...So I'll have to read myself into the matter,....
Good luck on it though!
Kind regards,

I am sure that she would do one for you too. She is a member here, so PM her. Her HQ is in Southern Wisconsin, so it isn't that far to go.

Anyone interested in the workshop? Carol Stiff will be the hostess and this is a great opportunity to learn TC techniques.

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

Hey, Scot, I just saw this thread now and I'd be interested. I've been a lurker at Carol's Yahoo group and have wished something would get scheduled for northern California, but Las Vegas could work for me. Are lodging rates better these days with the slow economy? Getting there and back would probably be my biggest expense but I'm still interested.

Thanks,

Harvey

Chironex 11-19-2008 01:13 PM

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

Harvey, glad you are interested. If we get enough people, it will be cheap to attend.
Yes, rates are dropping all over as they struggle to fill the rooms. I would try one of the comparison services, like Priceline, Hotels.com, Orbitz, etc.

harveyc 11-19-2008 03:12 PM

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

Okay, thanks. I saw on the group that something else was being talked about in March. Do you have an idea of the time of month just so I could pencil something in? Has nobody else expressed an interest yet?

microfarmer 11-19-2008 03:48 PM

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

I also would like to attend the seminar. Is it banana specific, or will there be other plants discussed as well? March is good for me, as I'd be riding in on my motorcycle (I go everywhere by bike), unless some of us Callee-fornee-inns can put together a carpool/vanpool and split the costs. Whatya think Harvey? Maybe set up a couple pickup zones as we head down the valley.

Just a thought...:0519:

harveyc 11-20-2008 12:57 PM

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

Sure, I can drive. My pickup only gets about 16mpg right now, but I've got a locking shell on the back and racks on top in case we pick up some prizes along the way. Gas is cheap now again! I'd even be willing to swing by LA, Riverside, or something like that, as long as it makes sense, though that is a bit out of the way. I just need to make sure it works out okay with my wife's work schedule.

Scot, are you planning on it probably being a weekend? How long are Carol's workshops, typically. I would want to be able to go to Mass on Sunday.

Chironex 11-20-2008 05:12 PM

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

The cool thing about it is that Carol has left open the scheduling, so give me some idea of your preferences. We need more people to attend, so please help me promote this.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

Okay, I'll post it in a couple of forums, but most people that I think would be interested are already in this forum. I don't think most forum members visit this part of the forum and wonder how many people have read these posts. Some local gardening clubs might be one avenue of greater exposure.

Thanks,

Harvey

Good idea, we are working on that. I know Pauly will ask the people in his orchid club and I am trying to find someone at UNLV and another local university.

Please try to give some ideas on timing for this workshop, so I can ask Carol to set aside the dates for us to maximize attendance. If March is good for most everyone, we can set-it up. Pick a week and also lmk what days of the week work out best.

Thanks for helping.

From what I understand, it will show you about 3-4 different plants. This way it will benefit those of us who grow more than bananas. We can make it more or less broad in scope depending upon the concensus.

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

Ok, I just got word from Carol Stiff that March 14, 2009 works for her. She also asked what interests we had in the group, to which I replied, primarily bananas, but also orchids, tropical fruit, walnuts, and other cool plants. Did I miss anything that you want to have her talk about?
Let's try to get at least 10-15 people to attend and show our support. (it will also lower our costs for the workshop)
Thanks!!!

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

I'd possibly like to be able to TC pineapple and/or papaya. I believe the Sugarloaf pinepapple is propagated by this manner as well as the TR Hovey papaya, but I'm sure anything discussed will get us the basics and the rest we can nail down in Carol's discussion group.

Thanks again, Scot!

I would like to learn the protocol for Coconut Sport (Macapuno) TC, if anyone knows about it. If this is possible, I can almost guarantee my attendance.

Thanks again, Scot.

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

I think I'll do this. I am now looking at prices to go to the Tropical Plant Industry Exposition, in January, in Ft. Lauderdale (for our non US friends, Fort Lauderdale is just north of Miami, in Florida) I have done this for 15 years and more, but this year, prices have relly escalated, but I'll still do it. Like $300+ a night for hotel, plus air fare, and then I saw that I can have 3 nights in Vegas incl. airfare & transfers for about $350.

I got my first bananas in 1972. I did my first tissue culture in 1979.

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

Ok, I just emailed Carol and need to start getting a head count. Please let me know by January 15 so that i can give Carol some idea as to how many to plan.

If we can't get enough interest, it doesn't make sense for Carol to make the trip out this way, so it will be some time before we can get another workshop out our way.

This may also be the least expensive seminar for our area since the room we will use is at my office, so it is free! I may be able to get Carol's room free ("comped") and I will pick her up and drop her off at the airport. So all of these savings get passed on to us. We just need more people to spread the remaining hard costs. The more we have, the lower the cost per person!

Thanks much!!!

Thanks, Scot. I plan on going to Las Vegas as long as someone else is able to go to keep me company on the drive (Microfarmer has indicated a desire to go). I had thought about trying the Bakersfield workshop since it was closer but that did not work out with my schedule.

I have written Carol about TC of chestnuts and she's provided me with some information, but I don't think that would be of much use to others.

I haven't been able to get anyone else to express an interest. I'll keep trying, though.

Thanks,

Awesome James! Carol said that she will have a web-based sign-up available in mid-January for people to register. I believe she will have it set-up to accept Paypal. More details to follow once it becomes available.

This is going to be a super workshop!!! I mentioned bananas, pineapple, guava, coconut and some other items of interest to Carol. With this much lead-time, I am sure that she will do everything possible to teach all of us the various methods to TC our favorites.

john_ny 12-29-2008 10:16 AM

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

How many people can you accomodate for this? Would it be OK to mention on some other sites?

Chironex 12-29-2008 02:23 PM

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

I think we could comfortably handle about 18-20. So, by all means mention it on other sites. Carol indicates that she will have the online sign-up ready for payments by January 11, 2009. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis so mark down this date to register early. I will let you know if it opens earlier.
Any questions can be PM'ed to me. Carol doesn't check her PM's here too often as she is on several blogs, so you can PM me or email Carol directly.

Chironex 12-30-2008 07:06 PM

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

Just received an email from Carol Stiff. Our group will be given a first sign-up opportunity prior to the web sign-up going public. You can pay for it online here: Home Tissue Cutlure Workshops

Cost is $115. and includes lunch, refreshments, and lots of free samples according to Carol.

Also, if you join Home Tissue Culture Group (a not-for-profit organization) for $30 you will get a discount on not only this workshop ($103 vs $115.), but also receive 10% off on supplies, kits etc.

I am unsure when the site goes public, but space will be limited. I would encourage anyone coming from a distance to carpool. If anyone has diet restrictions, please let us know well in advance and we will do our very best to accommodate.

Our address for the workshop is: Action Insurance - 4180 West Desert Inn Rd., Suite B1, Las Vegas, NV 89102 We are located about 1 mile west of the strip (Las Vegas Blvd)

Hi All,

I just joined as a member of this forum. I am interested in TC of banana. However I live in Sugar Land/Houston, Texas. The march 14th date Carol posted on her website suits me. My only concern is the cost of travel to Vegas from Houston.

I am wondering how many members from Texas are interested in TC of banana and would like a workshop done in Texas.

Why not carpool with some of the other members from Tx? There may also be some cheap flights as business is down in Vegas now. Brent from Pearland, TX (Bananaman88) wants to attend I believe. I would really like to meet as many of you as possible, so please try to attend!

Scot: As I mentioned before, I'll be out there the very end of Feb through the first few days of March. As the time for our trip gets closer I'll let you know exact dates. Maybe my wife, you, Pauley and I could get together for some luch somewhere. I'd love to see your TC set up. Are you pretty close to the Strip? I joined the HTCG and signed up for the workshop.

Will the video DVD that comes with the HTCG membership be enough advance prep to give me enough information to take full advantage of this workshop or should I be doing some extensive reading?

Is there the chance for some group hotel rate or are we best off finding our own deals?

Microfarmer and I are tentatively planning on renting a car and driving down from northern California. If anyone else is from up here or along the way and interested in sharing the ride, send either of us a PM.

Thanks again, Scot, and Happy New Year!

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest

Great Harvey!!! Yes, the DVD is quite detailed in TC techniques. I think you will enjoy it, although the music can be monotonous (sorry Carol).
There is a lot of info on the DVD as well. It is not as difficult as one would think. Once you walk through it the first few times, you get better every time following. Sterile technique and habit is the one thing to learn that will help the most. The rest is fairly straightforward. All of this is covered in the DVD.

As to group rates, I wish, but being new here myself, i don't have any good contacts. I will ask around and see if I can't find something for you, but I encourage you to look for the best deal you can find. We are only about a mile west of the strip, so it is easy to find.
Call me or PM with any questions. Glad to have you guys attend! Let's get more!!!

harveyc,
at least right now there are good deals. so if you get your reservation in soon i would think you could find a vary good rate just depends on how much luxury you want. although not lavish the down town hotels are quite cheep and they are even closer to Scots house. and if you get a rental car its a strait shot down Las Vegas Boulevard to the down town casino/hotels or you could use the highways but thats a bit more daunting but if you have GPS then it would be faster
