Why no roots on 16 inch pup?
So I removed my first 16 inch sword pup from my 5 ft tall dwarf brazilian today.
I was surprised to see that there was not 1 root attached! I just assumed that a pup this size would have some roots. When I remove tiny pups from my DC's they almost always have roots. Is this not uncommon to not have roots? I potted it anyway, put am doubting it will root. Thanks |
Re: Why no roots on 16 inch pup?
Each variety grows roots at a different time in their development cycle.
![]() Now that it has been separated it will focus on developing its own roots. Not to worry. |

As long as you have some of the corm it'll be fine. It happens but bananas are resilient. In a month it'll take off. Many times my smaller Blue Java don't have roots when I separate, but my RJ always do even if the same size.
Early on I had a run where I used shovel to separate pups and I just missed half the time. I now use a heavy steel digging bar and it always works for me, especially bigger pups. |

A picture would help. A pup can grow from a grow point on the corm or a rhirome on a root. ... Anyway when separating a pup from the corm, gouge into the corm a bit to help insure some roots from the corm are cut loose too. Pot or plant the pup. It should grow its own roots in a few weeks. |
