When is a good time to plant?

I am planning on buying another banana. I it will most likely be pretty good size (maybe 5 gallon) so not from seeds or anything. I'm close to the beach on Southern California with very mild temps. Could I plant now? Does it matter?

Richard recomended...

Dwarf Brazilian
Dwarf Namwa
Sweetheart

and I looked them up and they all look wonderful. I have a tiny yard so I would want a dwarf or a small variety. I actually think I will get two now because...well because I am obsessed now like all of you. :) hee hee

I have a side yard that is pretty shady but I could plant a few of them there. How much sun do I have to give them?

We're not obsessed...we're passionate!!! OK, and obsessed. Just a little, though.

Go for it. You have 2-4 months of good warm weather yet.

Jen, you're in zone 10 - you can plant almost anything you want, nearly anytime you wish. I am in a desert, but learned that winters here are not really "desert-like" in fact, sometimes they get snow! Oh well, beats Chicago's climate.

By the time most fruiting banana plants are 6 feet tall, they should be getting 8 hours of sun. So is the source of the shade a fence -- or something taller like your two story house?

And just in case you need it, you have my permission to go outside once an hour to estimate how many hours of sunlight something 6 feet tall will get this time of year :D

Oh I like that Passionate. :) That sounds much better.

Thanks for the info I'm excited that I can plant now. I'm going banana shopping this weekend. :)

Richard, you are a mind reader. Thank goodness you gave me permissoin Richard, now I won't feel guilty. :) Our houses are pretty close together here so it would be sandwiched between my two story and the house next door which is also a two story. I don't think it gets 8 hours. I better scrap that plan and stick with the back yard. I am still going to be a freak and check it all day long just in case. I want more banana planting space!

Thanks for all the feedback. I can't wait to plant.

Jen
