Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)

One of the largest Dwarf Brazillian bunches I've ever gotten-30 pounds! Good thing I'm vending at my local farmers market this weekend. No way just two of us can eat them all, especially with 2 massive bunches of Williams on the way and a freezer already full of frozen fruit.

The potted ones on the right are TCs of Pisang Raja and Red Kru that are waiting for a spot in the yard to open up.

Rob, I have bunch envy! BTW, are the two potted TC's from UH or somewhere else?

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)

They're from Aloha Tropicals in CA. Would love to get some from UH, but I don't know if they do it at UH Hilo. Also, I'm not interested in or already have what they have available.

25lbs Williams bunch harvested today. These are going to be sold at my farmers market this weekend along with one of the pups.

Small Ice Cream bunch accidentally harvested today. They lean heavily and it was propped up, but digging out a pup it shifted and fell. Probably could have used a few more weeks. Flower emerged a few days shy of 3 months ago. 4 hands, 34 bananas. Destined for freezing to make Ice Cream banana ice cream!

Another bunch of Williams harvested today. Likely to be harvesting more Ice Cream and patiently waiting for Gros Michel and Sucrier which look very close to ready.

Real Ice Creams are one of the varieties that are pretty easy to get here in Hawaii. A local nursery TCs them (I'm assuming) and supplies them statewide. Regularly at our local Home Depot. Have noticed when they first emerge they aren't particularly obviously blue.

Someone, not me, harvested my huge Gros Michel bunch that I've been waiting on since it flowered April 13th. It's taken me 4 years since planting to get a bunch this big. It faced the street where I live on the main road in my subdivision. Stupid banana thief!

That's the pits. Did any of your neighbors get a glimpse of the thief?

Sorry to hear about that! Pretty sad to steal fruit. Maybe someone new what the plant was that lived by you?

Yeah, that is the 'local' mindset - what is yours is mine, too, if I want it and you're not around. I'd recommend a 'bunch bag' next time around. The thief was probably eyeing it for a while, and was just waiting for the right moment.

No witnesses and discovered it on my way to the airport so no time to ask anyone. People can be so lame. But managed to cut down my other bunch next to it that wasn't ready but I don't want that to disappear too! Most of my biggest bunches face the same main street, so I'm thinking booby traps, lol!

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)

I knew a guy that had 2 Ae Ae pups planted in the front yard.

Just so every one could enjoy them too.

And one day the were gone during the night.:(

All my fruit trees are behind the fence. Except the Jaboticaba and the Fuyu. They are too weird looking to get raided.

And naners that tilt towards the fence get trained upright with rope when the flower shows up.

Fact of life!

Harvested a very small bunch of Sucrier aka Pisang Mas after about 3 years in the ground and a hair under 3 months since the flower emerged. Probably could have waited but I didn't want it ripening when I'm gone most of September. Also harvested another Dwarf Brazillian bunch early for the same reason.

Harvested the Datil bunch. Waited longer than usual to see if fingers got bigger - they didn't. Notice the choke point on the peeduncle.

Another DB bunch, 5 months from flower to harvest, probably had 2-4 weeks to go but this is another one that was right on the street tempting thieves. Hoping they ripen quickly. I hate having to buy them!

Small bunch of Ice Cream. They look more blue in real life than in the picture. Plant was propped up but p-stem collapsed above that so it was time to harvest.

Due the plant being seriously neglected the bunch only half filled in. If you want to swing by I'll hook you up but keep in mind they taste no where near what they usually taste like when properly cared for.

True, but it still will be better tasting then the store, and at this time of the year a hard to find naner in our parts. I have a new dish at the restaurants I want to try with them. ill call ya... Thanks

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)

Hi,

last Monday I harvested two inflorescences from the super banana from Embrapa, the fruits are more like Musa "Prata" alias "Brazilian", one AAAB type, disease resistant. This was the second harvest! The first harvest was last year, after the frost from 26th June 2011 with -2°C. The fruits have survived the frost, but they were still unripen and I took the fruits to Germany. Then they ripened in Germany but the taste was not so good and too dry and without aroma. The new fruits from the second harvest after the frostfree southern winter are much better, larger and with a good taste, ripen at the plant.

There is also one another harvest from Nanicao, in the next weeks I will also harvest at my pond in my banana special garden.

Best wishes
Joachim
