Can't believe how fast that happened. Am I going to have to start taking pictures twice a day?

Aside from the obvious bananas, look at the still closed petal on the left, see the bit of green peaking out? More bananas!:0519:

I'm going to add photos to this post every day so I can look back and see how it progressed. And my new camera should be in on Wednesday, so no more of the cell phone foolishness!!

2nd bunch!

Added pictures from Sunday. The little green spot showing on Saturday opened all the way overnight to reveal the full second bunch of bananas!

How many should I expect to get out of this bloom? No signs of a third one yet.

Congrats! Your banana and my Dwarf Brazilian are about on the same pace. I think my 4th hand is showing today. What variety is yours?

I have a thread with mine as well at http://www.bananas.org/f2/dwarf-braz...loom-5108.html.

I have a couple of Dwarf Orinoco that I thought should have bloomed by now, but no flag leaf in sight!

I don't know how big your nana is but mine is leaning pretty bad already. Guess I'll have to stake it up so it doesn't snap.

Mine are not really heavy enough to cause leaning. I looked this morning though and there are also two other leaf stalks right underneath the flowering stalk, giving it added support. If you look at the picture from Wednesday, you can see what I'm talking about.

I am going to keep an eye on it though and add support if necessary, I have some two by fours standing by.

No added picture today as it looks exactly like it did yesterday.

I do have a question though, what's the deal with the sticky stuff dripping all over the other leaves and my deck rail? An unexpected bonus is that the flowering bananas sure do smell good!

I bumped my flower when I was crawling on my back taking a picture the other day and it got on me and my clothes but washed off easily. It wasn't very sticky either, very watery. I have humming birds around here but they don't seem to have discovered the banana yet, they are busy with lantana and other flowers. I do see wasps and other insects hanging around, though.

I think the nectar is different from the latex sap in the plant. I have stains on my drive way from leaving fresh cut pseudo stems on it, but the flower nectar that drips on it all the time just washes right off.

The stuff I have on my leaves is very thick, gooey and sticky. It's definitely coming from the blooms as it's only found directly below them.

If you touch the flowers you'll get some on them and see that when it first comes out it's not sticky at all. After it sits for a while it becomes thicker and more sticky, but it still washes of my driveway with water. You might try tasting it, it's lightly sweet and quite nice actually.

You've actually got an extra set! Do all of yours have six bananas? Is that standard, or does it vary?

Great looking plant!

Re: We've gone BANANAS!!

Nectar and sap are definitely different. I've yet to find anything that will remove sap stains once you get them on your clothes, patio, etc. Nectar should be no problem. The bees, wasps, and hummingbirds sure do love it!

As you can see, I've got two new blooms! Is it normal for the leaves to have opened up while the bananas are so small? They are maybe 1/4 of the diameter of the first two when the leaves curled back. Should I be doing anything differently/extra at this point? Or should I just continue to sit back and enjoy the show?:lurk:

(oh yeah, can you tell I got my new camera? Just a little difference!)

One day and two more hands showed up! That's now a total of 6, for a whopping 36 nanas so far! It looks like there are a couple more getting ready to pop too!

The leaves are pulling back from the bananas while they are really small now, are these little finger things actually going to grow? Doesn't look like they are getting any bigger, and the first two hands were huge when the leaves peeled back (as seen in the top photos).

I'm I only going to get twelve edible bananas?

Also, it looks like something crawled up and ate a couple of the tiny "fingers" as I've come to call them. If you click to open up the larger copy of the last picture, you can see the lowest hand on the right only has a couple of fingers, and there are nubs that look to be sheared off at the top of the hand.

comments?

Re: We've gone BANANAS!!

Congratulations.
You may have more then twelve edible bananas. The other will grow too.
So in three month I can come for a visit to eat a banana together with you?:)

Taylor 07-27-2008 05:22 PM

Re: We've gone BANANAS!!

Those "small ones" are the male flowers. They will drop off in a day or 2 after opening. That said, you will only have 12 bananas.

Taylor 07-27-2008 05:24 PM

Re: We've gone BANANAS!!

PS: Which means the big ones were the female flowers...which in the case that this plant were to produce seed, the males would pollinate the females, the males would die, and the females would stay to to take in energy to produce seeds are part of the life cycle. Which won't happen since Musa orinoco is an edible cultivar.
