Default Update: PA banana farmer relocating to southern Texas...and plant identification

Hey All,

I made it! Thanks for all of the advice on relocating plants. In the end I took the path of least resistance. We rented a Penske truck and loaded the plants up (thankful for "miscellaneous expense credit" in the relocation package). I can't wait to get settled in and get these nanas in the ground, but until then they will remain in pots. So far the plants seem happy and the plants are growing faster than I could have imagined. We have had a lot of rain here in southern Texas so it might be a good thing that they aren't in the ground.

A few days after arriving one of my dwarf plants put up a flag, now there is a flower and bananas too. Like so many others, I haven't been able to confirm the variety as I made the purchase online. I think this plant could be a dwarf orinoco or a raja puri...I am hoping someone can confirm this and if my thought is completely wrong maybe give me a correct identification. Here are links to some pictures.

Thanks,
Sandy

Wow great job! That's EXACTLY how I would do it, and I have just as many plants as well

I'm in SE Texas and we have a ton of nasty clay here... check how the soil is where you live. The problem lies with water not draining in heavy clay. Most of my bananas don't like it, but my Orinoco's do just fine so results may vary.

I've built raised beds for my bananas located in extremely heavy clay and they LOVE it and have been growing a lot more now.
I initially dug 4ft holes in the clay but it was just acting like a big clay bowl so I'm having to go back and do double the work. I wish I would have done this from the beginning but oh well.

Just my 2c

THANK YOU for your 2c. I had raised garden beds in PA. I used 2x12s. I was thinking about going with corrugated metal beds thinking they will last longer, won't bow, etc...but I am open to suggestions and now that I typed that, that might be a good idea for a garden but the banana plants might look a bit ridiculous in those. I am in the Edinburg area...hoping to be in the Los Fresnos area.

Nice! I'm just using 2x10's and it's working just fine for me.
2x12's are double the cost right now with these ridiculous lumber prices >_>
