Question Ty Ty Gold?

Hi I just found this website which has a banana called ty ty gold. Is it just me or does it sound similar to texas star or cali gold. It's description says,

"This is a ?cavendish type? that has a distinguishable gold coloration on the stem. Not sure what the fruit taste like on this one. This is another dwarf Banana, reaching between *4'-6'*, ?will grow up to 25'?, will grow in full sun and can tolerate down to 25 Degrees."

Teh stars mark what it similar to cali gold or texas star and the question marks are what confuses me.

You have to use the "Search" feature. There have been numerous posts abouut TY Ty, most of them negative. I have never bought a banana from them (and I never will), but many years ago, they had this great sale on azaleas. I ordered a bunch, and added a hazelnut , and maybe a couple of other things, to round out the order. When they sent them, they said that the azaleas, (which were what I really wanted) were sold out, and they sent the Corylus (Hazelnut), and it seems like something they collected from the wild. The nuts are these little dried up things, the size of peas. My reccomendation is do not have anyhing to do with Ty-TY.

No the tyty gold is not associated with tyty nursery at all it may have started their but they do not sell it anymore. Ty Ty makes my laugh with all of their poorly photoshoped pics.

The Ty Ty nursery is where that banana started and no one knows of any way that it is remarkable. Stick with the varieties you know better. It can't be great if even Ty Ty doesn't even sell it anymore.

I have one, (not directly from TYTy) and it has flowered once in 7 years and made exactly one (1) banana (banana, NOT bunch). Save you $.

Wow....and the incredible confusion with TyTy/Texas Star once again becomes more complex. This is one substantial mystery that may never be solved!

This poor thing has been in a pot,so I am sure it hasn't grown to it's full potential. I need to get it in the ground to really see what it will do.

I have had TX Star from from 3 different sources, including Ty Ty Nursery in GA. I have had Ty Ty Gold from 3 different sources. The description from the sources is consistent with each variety. The TX Star's description is that it is closer to the Dwarf Orinoco and the CA Gold, while the TyTy Gold is more of a Cavendish variety. I have one surviving TyTy Gold, 2 CA Gold. The CA Cold Hardy that I got last year grew pretty large, but died last Winter, as all of my TX Stars.

What varieties would you like to try next?

Is that an offer? FYI - the one surviving Ty Ty Gold that I mentioned earlier is the one that came from you. The ones I got from Ben and Anderson Nursery just shriveled and died. Must be the residual benefits from your banana fuel! When I get home this weekend, I'll transfer it to a 15 gallon pot. It is now only in a 5 gallon pot.

As for the next variety, I would like to get some more Dwarf Orinoco again. I will definitely get several varieties of Karat and the dwarf form of Lacatan, and of course, the Seņorita! If only my friends overseas can move a little faster (sigh!)

Very nice to hear from you, Richard.

Kind regards,

Chong

Yes, I originally had 4 or 5 Ty Ty Golds from Anderson and had to nurture them for several months before they appeared healthy. One of them died along the way. Oh well. Their bananas are growing in patches around the property and subject to daily attacks by gophers. When someone purchases a banana plant, they go dig up a pup -- which may or may not have a viable corm. However, their palms and other tropicals are grown in 2 large greenhouses. They take those plants quite seriously and the plants are in excellent condition.

Chong, I do have a Dwarf Orinoco pup to spare so please send me an email when you are ready for it.
