Re: Snow White Ae Ae
It has to have some 'green' to survive!
The green parts are NECESSARY since those are the factories where the plant makes its food. This won't survive unless it is still part of a plant with chlorophyll, or has a sufficient amount somewhere in the leaves. |

Re: Snow White Ae Ae
I know it sounds improbable, but the picture you see with the all-white leaves is how it's been growing since separated from the mother plant a year ago.
Although the leaves have always been white, the stock has a slight greenish tinge, so I assume this is how it is able to create photosynthesis. It is very slow growing, as evident by the hammer used for scale. The plant's been growing in indirect sunlight to prevent leaf burn, which also my be a factor in its slow growth. I've always heard that they die once separated from the mother, but this plant is proof that is not necessarily true. Last edited by niblicksrus : 05-20-2019 at 11:22 AM. |

Re: Snow White Ae Ae
I've grown thousands of these pure white types and what I've observed is that the amount of growth it will achieve is based on the amount of stored nutrients it has when separated from the mother plant or sister plant. But time is something the grower can control. The grower can easily control the plant's life or death expectancy by controlling the amount of space of the root zone which can essentially slow the growth. The plant will end with the same amount of growth but over a longer period of time. I don't like to compare them to a green plant but prefer to compare them to cut flowers that can stay absolutely beautiful for a year or longer. Eventually the plant will not have the force to push a new cigar leaf to the top but the pseudostem can be shortened which will allow the plant to produce a few more leaves.

They do just as well or better when kept in complete darkness.
