River Rock Mulch?
Gave away a few musa basjoo pups last month, sword suckers over two feet tall with decent corms and healthy root systems, to a guy last month who has complained that they aren't doing well.
First of all, they are in full sun, as in all day long. Mine are full morning sun. So he has that going against him. Also, he waters at night, I've always watered in the morning. Can't imagine leaving the plant to roast in the Dirty South heat and then dumping water into our clay soils overnight. Strike two? Finally, he has them mulched with river rock, probably in the 1-2" category, right up to the corms. I would think this wouldn't help cool the roots like mulch would. Anybody care to offer share some experience that I can relay back to him? I recommend Bananas.org to anyone who receives one of my pups, but it's like leading a horse to water. Thanks in advance! |

Re: River Rock Mulch?
The plants will get use to the full sun but it's better to gradually get them use to it.
I water in the morning and sometimes in the evening, if watering in the evening water the base and keep the water off the plant. Rock mulch can hold a lot of heat sometimes and may not be good for some plants.
