Thought I'd post some pictures of my greenhouse. It has been a very busy season.

Thanks, I live in Jackson, MS ZONE 8b
Here is a link to Rion. They have various greenhouse sizes. The kit took me about a week to put together alone. Extra helpers would make it go faster. There are probably cheaper greenhouses on the market, but this one appealled to me. My set up cost me $3500 (when all said and done). Are you going to heat the greenhouse ? From what I've heard of Siam Rubies it's going to need some protection.

Oh yes, I've been ussing a Lasko ceramic heater with an automated feature to keep the greenhouse at 60 F. I've left the shade cloth on til it really gets chilly outside. The greenhouse stays 60 F at night and 80-95 F during the day.
As for Siam Ruby, MSU (Mississippi State University) extension office has been over wintering Siam Ruby outdoors for several years. The extension office is only 30 minutes from my house (zone 8). The extension office has a nice collection of Musa they are testing for our area. LOL, I was TOTALLY tempted to dig up a few banana's, but I think they would have noticed the 14 foot pseudostem poking out of my backpack. Last edited by bananas101 : 11-10-2011 at 07:23 PM. |

Colorful bananas can thrive across the state (08-17-2011)
Here is a recent article about it. All of the beds at the MSU extension office are raised beds. I asked the head horticulturalist how they over winter their bananas. He said they truck in a ton of mulch. Last edited by bananas101 : 11-10-2011 at 09:07 PM. |

I gave in to second guessing information. I potted up half the clump of Siam Ruby and left the rest in the ground. /crosses fingers

I have a Rion. I forgot the exact dimensions, but I don't believe it's that big.
Just keep a look out for bugs. They like crowded areas. |

Gorgeous!! I envy that Greenhouse.
My siam rubies melted away here but I think it was because the soil was too moist. Keep them dry!

The soil base here is all yazoo clay in Jackson MS. I typically work around this issue by constructing raised beds for good drainage. I definately keep my local nursery a float by all the yards of organic mix that I use to fill my beds.
I wanted a larger greenhouse but the space in the second courtyard was limited. I settled for the rion 8 foot by 16 foot. The entire package with supplies was roughly 3500 dollars. I had to splurge this season because I switched jobs and lost my space in the greenhouses at work. I guess I got spoiled at work for the past 20 years having so much greenhouse space to play with. |
