I believe the pop-up saying that I had a virus was the actual virus or the prompt to get me to download the virus. It looked very real like it was from Microsoft's virus blocker. I'm not too worried about it because my Norton caught it, but I thought everyone should know.
You are correct, they are bogus. Do not click on them, not even to turn them off. Sometimes the only way I can get rid of them is to shut down the machine and restart.

I have a blocker in Firefox but when I got those pop-ups I've used Task Manager to shut them down. You can start Task Manager by using Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys.

Thanks Harvey, I hate shutting down the computer just to get rid of them.

I came across that also. It was generated by a Google Ad that launched the bogus virus alert if your mouse passed over it. I reported the ad to Google. I have not seen it again -- I would guess it was coming up on other sites too and Google quickly deleted it.

Thanks Mitchel, Harvey, and Richard. I'll use Task Manager in the future if I ever run across that again. That was kind of scary. I'm very glad to know that it was a Google Ad, Richard, and not this web site. I almost didn't want to return to bananas.org for fear of it happening again, but I do love my bananas!

You'll find these things all over the internet, not just here. I saw a show that said some of them will place spyware on your machine when you click the close button which is why I never click them.

That happened to me once, something came up saying I had 4 Trojans and a ton of other viruses. It said to get rid of them by downloading something, but I new if I clicked that it would send all of those viruses into my PC. My dad clicked out of it and said it was trying to put a virus in the computer but he new it was false 'cause it was software we did not have. Stupid Trojans.
