Possible Fruiting and Leaf problem

So I've never had experience with a banana plant before but I think this plant is getting ready to flower. Weird thing is it can't be more than a year old because its about two feet tall maybe 2 1/2 tops and is so small even for a typical dwarf.

Is this a cigar leaf?

Also it seems the lowest leaf turns a bright orange gold color and I wanted to know what it is and what I can do to stop it?

Hey nice photos. Cigar Leaf is one that looks like it is burnt or rotting at the outer end. The lowest leaf on your plant looks like it would be normal to me, but then here where I am all of our 2000 plus plants get a fungus going on with them that makes them look much worse than yours does. Since bananas grow quickly and then wither, I believe that the lower leaves are usually die off.

Your plant does not look like it is about to flower to me. That is simply the newest leaf unfurling. The lower leaf that is turning yellow is just part of the natural process. Do a search for "flag leaves" and you should find some posts and pics so that you can see what one looks like.

Thanks you two for the help; I was just wondering because the leaf when it was comming out looked quite different from the other banana leafs when they came out (Its the fourth one so far); kind of like the end of it was hooked or something like that .

Also thanks for telling me that was normal because its the third leaf on the bottom to do that. I was worried I might infect that other banana.

I think the term, "cigar leaf" just refers to the way the emerging leaf is rolled up, like a cigar.

I agree, John. It was my understanding, that 'cigar' leaf refers to the new emerging leaves that are still rolled up. Your plant is definitely not fruiting...far from it by the looks of it. It looks very healthy, though, so just keep doing what you're doing!

As for the leaf at the bottom, it's totally normal for the bottom leaf or two on plants to be turning yellow/brown and dying. As they put on new leaves, the old leaves turn brown and fall off. This is why older plants tend to have only large mature leaves at the top. Nothing to worry about...when it gets brown/dried up just cut it off at the base with scissors or a sharp knife.

That is still a pup but looks normal. You may have to wait a year to expect it to flower, it should have more girt and much taller but then here comes the winter. Better protect it.
