Thanks, Scot, I just watched the main video and enjoyed it. Many of us in areas with climate challenges just think of Hawaii as paradise without fully recognizing all of the pest challenges there. It was great to get a good handle on what growers there have to go through to produce bananas.

I was also surprised that suckers are so large when removed (6" psuedostem or larger). "Wow" was my initial impression. I was also surprised to see that so much of the corm is trimmed off when various pests are present.

Thanks again,

Harvey

Yep you have the weather but the pests also love the climate as well. There is always some kind of drawback. I was looking at the temperatures in Lima and it rarely goes under about 60 or over 90 but the rainfall is horrible. The high months its like 8mm average. Not to mention I'm not a fan of places where there are earthquakes Thats one of the things that surprises my wife is the amount of rain we get here around Houston Well except for this summer!

Ooh, yuck - Lima's in the desert. I gave up on even trying to get anything other than a few hardy palms to grow when I lived there!

Harvey, there is of course some variability among farmers in the size of suckers used at planting. But the suckers tend to be larger than you'd expect. They really must trim them severely due to the nematodes. A well-managed banana farm in Hawaii can grow for 15 - 20 years before any knockdown and fallowing, but probably not if suckers are infested with nematodes at planting.

Thanks, Scot. I've received corms that were trimmed but just barely to the the surface or slightly below. I didn't know that this much of the corm could be trimmed off but it's obvious now that the roots originate from deep within the corm. I also hadn't thought of treating with hot water although something similar is done by some chestnut growers (a crop I grow) in areas where weevils infest the nuts.

Once a banana plot is fallowed, how many years might it be before it's planted to bananas again? Are other crops grown on the land in the meantime?

Thanks,

Harvey

Harvey, the duration of fallow depends on a number of factors, including soil type, nematode species and the population sizes, and the types of weeds present (some weeds are hosts of some nematodes). Most farmers would fallow for at least 1 year, and longer if soil samples show high populations after 1 year. Most farmers who fallow bananas do not plant other crops in the fallowed areas, but those removing fields completely from banana production due to a history of nematode problems will usually plant something else.

Hello everyone.

The “Growing Bananas” video is now available for your viewing at youtube:

Part 1:
Part 2:
Part 3:
Part 4:

The image quality is much better on the DVD, but youtube is probably more convenient.

I really want to start my own banana plantation now! Don't know how well that will work out in MO or IA, though Well, definitely a great video with a lot of educational material! Thanks a bunch! (not meant to be a pun, but it works, huh?) Well done!
