New Color Siam Ruby

Has anyone ever seen this color Siam Ruby? If not how hard would it be to TC it? So far it has 1 pup with 2 leaves both are green.

There seems to be lots of color variation coming out of the tissue cultures. If you were to TC this one, I'm not sure what you would happen, you might get plants that look true to type or you may get as much variation as is normally seen with 'Siam Ruby'.

That is really interesting. It might be as difficult to TC as Aeae since it appears to be a chimera in nature. These are tough since the cells providing for the variegation are scattered in the meristem and don't necessarily come through in the Cultured plant. A few of us are working on ways to TC them, but it is still quite a lot of conjecture and experimentation. On the other hand, we need explant material in order to attempt TC'ing these. So, save some pups for that in addition to keeping some back-ups in case it doesn't work in TC.
It sure has some beautiful colors and I hope that we will figure out a way to clone them. Gabe is far more experienced than I, so I hope that he will chime in on this thread, too.

Mine got some bright red coloration like that last year when it got a bit too cold before I brought it in for the winter. Even though I'm in Houston I decided not to take any chances with this one until we know a bit more about its hardiness.

So is that a yes this type of color variation has been seen before? I was thinking of swinging by Agristarts and seeing what they could do.

I think mine was simply damage to the leaf due to cold weather that brought out colors not normally seen. I've never seen mine look that way since. I seriously doubt yours is due to cold damage considering it's July, so you may have something there. I tend to agree with Gabe, though that they seem highly variable and I would think it would be tough to get another one just like it. Just my opinion.

Chris also stated in the pic description in the gallery that it was just purchased at a nursery. Could this also be a possibility of some lack of sunlight? Maybe grown in the shade? I've seen some nurseries not know how to care for plants like this and grow them under their shade clothes.

Actually the first picture I ever saw of this plant, it was all crimson red and not burgundy, as the prevailing color appears to be in most plants that I'm seeing now. At that time it was called the "Ace of Hearts".

I think you've got a really nice new color variation there! You need to baby that one and see how the pups turn out. I haven't seen one yet that has two different shades of red, so you could have a very valuable plant there. Please keep us updated on its progress!

Did you buy it with that color?
My siam ruby’s leafs will turn that color, when they are dying.

Sure it can be TC'ed, but keeping the variegation is the problem. Gabe was saying that someone actually did it, but later the variegation faded. We need a few sample Aeae's to try some other methods of micropropagation with chimeras. Anyone care to donate an Aeae? I didn't think so. lol

looks great... mine all survived the jump over the 'pond' and are just colouring up nicely in the poly tunnel. the stress of the trip has put 3 of them into pup mode already too. great colouration, fingers crossed for these babies

Ok so I swung by PDN this weekend and spoke with Tony Avent, he mentioned that he sees this coloration in about 5% of his Siam Rubies. He also echoed what Gabe said regarding TC'ing this plant and there is no way to proedict what will happen. Can someone help me ID this banana I received from a freind it's cold hardy to zone 7 and the 8 leaf I now see this coloration. Tony thought it was a NamWah Pearl but I thought it was not cold hardy in zone 7. Any help would be appreciated.
