Hi

I'm thinking of using burlap sacks around my banana and fruit trees as a method of keeping out weeds as well as a mulch/moisture retainer for my plants.

I use burlap sacks on my worm bed and it allows water in easy enough:}

Anybody doing that? Any info or thoughts will be truly appreciated.

If you got them, use them. They are great at doing the job. We don't have any so we use a lot of tree mulch and manure compost. The bags sound a lot easier and speedier, saves the back for other chores. Pics of your progress. Good growing.

Worm beds ! Where's the picture of your worm bed
I'm going tomorrow to get me some worms .. I had some in a 5 gallon bucket and just gave them to a friend who has a large dirt garden.. wasn't a lot only about three hands full.., But I started with a 3 dollar fishing container
Oh almost forgot ... I have used burlap for all manor of weed control around all kinds of plants. I like it . I started using the black weed block because I got a huge amount of it off the highway . they were using it as a visual barrier. they removed it and tossed it in the trash pile .. Must have been 500 feet of it . I shared it with lots of friends.. Weed block stops pups from shooting up and seeing the sun Burlap allows the pups to stick up through the fibers ..

Any horse or cattle farms close by? Most have an excess of manure That you can get easily. Worms multiply rapidly, just give them food. Our cattle supply us with enough manure to provide all of our needs. Keep the bananas happy and they will keep you sated.

I have used old rugs of a natural fiber in my vegetable gardens, just cutting holes in the appropriate spots, they eventually break down and add to the soil and until then they do a great job of keeping the weeds out
