Sorry to hear about your situation and it can be difficult to try to reason with unreasonable people, but allow me to make a suggestion that may help.

You mentioned that you offered to pay 6-months rent up-front, which means you have some cash available. And, you mentioned that the house is old with very ineffecient Windows.

Why don't you try to make a deal that you will pay to upgrade the windows to something energy efficient if she forgoes the $50/month rent increase AND let's you keep your plants?

Depending on how much the windows cost, you may even be able to get more than $50/month knocked off the bill!

Goodluck!

Well, before moving in I HAD some cash available. However, I was unemployed for quite a while. I was then working for my dad, but broke my leg last fall and couldn't work for several months, plus I had medical bills from that ordeal. So savings are pretty much gone now.

There's a guy on the East Coast looking for adult bananas that'll fruit this season; they're not going to be easy to find.
Maybe you could restock the bank account & find homes for some of your kids at the same time, then re-populate 'nanner inventory with smaller, easier to hide cultivars. (& turn the bathroom into a jungle).

It's pretty simple. Either remove your plants or find a new place.

It sounds like you should find a new place. The landlord is unreasonable and seems unwilling to compromise on anything. No need to create any un-needed drama by turning up the heat or opening windows.

I agree...and telling someone they can't grow plants inside is pretty crappy
find another place where you can be happy.

BTW-I was kidding about leaving the heat on and air-conditioning and what not-

I mean seriously-who does that ? ( ; lol

Well, I'm not moving for now unless my employment situation changes. That and a 12 month lease was already signed (basically forced to since I can't afford to move). And I don't plan to be a dick and screw her over by cranking the heat and opening windows. HOWEVER, I'm not playing nice either.....she really pissed me off with this whole situation (and I'm extremely vindictive and NOT someone who you should piss off). I'm not going out of my way to be mean, but I'm not gonna be nice either....going to continue to run the heat as we have done in the past. It will be her little lesson to learn that plants don't cause higher heating bills. I'm not going to be uncomfortably cold whether I pay the bill or she does.

I'll talk with her about the plants again in mid summer to fall time and see if her views on the subject have changed. If she allows the plants to be inside, I'll be nice and keep the heat lower than this past winter. If not, then pardon my french but f%$* her.

Kinda sad this all went down because before this, we were on good terms and I feel like I was an ideal tenant (always paying bills on time, taking care of the place, weeding crab grass out of the yard, removing trees growing up around the house, etc etc). And especially considering where I live (the fringe of the ghetto), I don't feel like she will be able to find anyone better than us to live here. I know the renters before us were deadbeats (always fighting, breaking things, etc) and the cops came here looking for them a while back.

I know its a drag-I would be bummed out if my landlord told me
I had to stop growing palms in the front yard....btw

Heres another thought,if she won't change her mind about you
growing your nanars inside, ask her if she would be willing to
let you out of the lease since she has kinda changed things up on you
mid stream-maybe then she will understand that this is important to you
and possibly enter into a more meaningful dialog.....anyway,hope it
works out and just to be clear....I WAS KIDDING about all the windows
open and heat/air-conditioning being left on-just a little sarcasm there( ;

Good luck!

When I lived in a large apt complex, 200+ units, I was recognized in the monthly 'community' news letter, as having the nicest apt landscaping (no bananas, but bougainvillea and grapes growing across the balcony). Two months later, a new manager took over and said everything had to be cut down-
With your situation was the landlady saying prices had gone up or usage? No one has control over prices, but usage can be altered. I vote with those that say it's time to move on!

Move to florida.
construction is back
the mexicans have depopulated many low skill or skilled jobs and employers are offering to train like I've never seen.
get a trade, not that construction is gravy, but our wimter is

outside bananas are possible here
look outside metro areas, housing is in a tiny upswing now but I suspect prices arent gonna skyrocket outside the city like before, probably slow gains in rural areas

south east of cities os best since our cold comes from the north west
lakes offer a similar buffer

stop renting
keep your plants
screw her and a dilaptated old house.
