Musa Mysore self fertile?
Quick question? Is mysore self fertile or no? I purchased one from HD and there were two plants (even height) in the pot. Is there any reason for this? I thought maybe bc the plant was not self fertile or something. ALso any other tips or good word for this variety? Thanks

Re: Musa Mysore self fertile?
All edible bananas are self-fertile, including Mysore. It's a good variety that produces great tasting fruit, but it can have issues with banana streak virus. Since it's from a big box store, your plant might be mislabeled, can you post some pics so we can confirm it?

Re: Musa Mysore self fertile?
Right. Technically, they are parthenocarpic and so fertility is not an issue because pollination is not required (and in most cases, difficult to achieve). This is true of all edible bananas.
There are probably two plants in the pot because one is a sucker (pup) off the other. |
Re: Musa Mysore self fertile?
It's not Mysore. Might be Dwarf Cavendish. The other, hard to say at this point. Could be Ice Cream, but more likely is the Pisang Awak clone that is sold as Ice Cream. By all accounts, it's a better banana anyway, so be glad if it was mixed up.

Definitely not Mysore. Here's a picture of my Mysore. Note the red coloration.

Re: Musa Mysore self fertile?
Damn! Ive been bamboozled twice!!!! this sucks , how can agristarts and these other guys get away with this stuff. Seriously??? Ok, regroup... (lol), i think im going to dig up the DC and pot it or something, and then try to get a mysore or praying hands. Those are really cool. Does any one know where i can get a mysore or praying hands in SD? thanks and thanks for your banana mentorship my So Cal Bretheren: Caliboy and Ventura. I appreciate it!

Re: Musa Mysore self fertile?
Get a Pisang Ceylon or Pisang Klotek, they're the same thing as Mysore but without the BSV issues (that can spread to your other plants and cause trouble). All I can say is that you're fortunate to live in SD, Jon (pitangadiego) has probably the most extensive banana collection in the region, and he has all three of those varieties, I believe. Drop him a line and you should be able to get your hands on one. It says that he has Pisang Ceylon available right now, I would ask him about that. Here's his website:

Get a Dwarf Namwah if your growing for fruit it will do better for you than Mysore

I don't think the banana misidentification by Agristarts and others is intentional. Just lack of knowledge and laziness -- lack of willingness to learn how to identify what you sell and poor quality control. |

Get K-M5 I heard they are the best

For the rest of you who don't know what we're talking about with "Could This Be A Mona Lisa", the answer is no, it can't be, but we don't know what it is. |
