does anyone know if this will breed true from seed?

Since this plant is not a wild species, I removed it from that forum and placed it here.

I haven't heard of any edible banana that is able to breed true from seed. Assuming you could even get it to set any seed from its own pollen, it is likely the progeny would all be very different. It may not even be able to set seed very well, I can't find any references that it can't, but based on the info I have it doesn't appear to be a very prolific seed setter as some cultivars can be.

I bought 30 seeds from this supplier this year (as they were the only supplier I could find for Chinichampa). Zero germination I'm afraid in six months. Will leave them until next Spring but I'm not holding out any hope!

Kev,

I know its still early but have you seen any signs of germination yet ? I got some from the same supplier and have sowed them only a week or so back.

Got to have something to do in the winter

Still no germination on the Chinichampa here. Funnily enough, a second Microcarpa seed has sprouted in the same tray despite the colder temps here of late (they're in an unheated sealed greenhouse)! I'll probably leave well alone until next April before trying again ............ perhaps using a different method.

I guess that doesnt bode well for mine. I sowed them using Erland's method, they are currently in a heated prop on 10 hrs off 14 so it will be interested to see how they go.

funny enough i put them in to soak last night along with some other of this winters projects. 3 days soaking then off into the propagator... I'll let you know
