I pulled out my Manzano.

This week I pulled out my Manzano. In my book this variety is a loser. It grows very tall and skinny, it always needs to be braced when it has fruit. Even if you brace it, it will easily break somewhere on the pseudostem. And the fruit is tiny and not many of them. So I pulled it. I don't have room for varieties like this. Just wanted to spread some info. Maybe some other people have had better experiences with it, but for me it's a loser.

Noooooo :(
I'm growing Manzano and it's actually one of the varieties I really want to fruit.
Mine is still a pup so I can't really provide any input on the skinny stem issue.

BBJ just recently picked up a Manzano growing on the side of the road and his pictures show it to have a pretty beefy pseudostem - not skinny at all.

The description that he said does not sound at all like a true Manzano.

Maybe Bill had tall Brazilian........ Maybe Manzano performs different in different climates. IMHO Manzano is a great tasting variety!

Sounds exactly like the Manzano I had. Mine is gone, too.

Makes sense to pull hassles and non-performers from the patch. Plenty of varieties out there but time and space is limited. Good job pulling the trigger.

Akula, have you gotten rid of that banana Gabe thought at first was orinoco, that you bought as raja puri?

Actually I just harvested a small ten finger bunch from that Dwarf Orinoco. It has one nice looking follower and I'm expecting a better bunch next year since this dinky bunch came from the original planting which is just about always subpar for me. I haven't eaten them yet. I don't mind having one Dwarf Orinoco but I don't need two...at least until I get a Viente Cohol from Smeash or a Praying Hands from you . Haha.

Re: I pulled out my Manzano.

I would love to provide photos of the plant but like I said, I pulled them out. They do have a nice subacid flavor which I like.

9' fruiting height? That doesn't sound like manzano. Mine fruited at 12-14'. Thin PS that has broke on me many times before I could get fruit to ripen. To finally taste fruit I moved the plant next to a palm tree. When the plant flowered I strapped the PS to the trunk of the palm tree. That way it couldn't fall over or break. I have photos of the fruit. But it just looks like a small Manzano. I don't get a lot of heat so most of my fruit is a little small.

In my opinion the fruit tastes fine but their just isn't enough of them. And the tree is a pain to grow making it not worth it. There are many better varieties.

Maybe you guys are growing Brazilian or Dwarf Brazilian as Manzano. They get mixed up sometimes because of the Apple name. Dwarf Brazilian has a stout PS and is definitely worth growing.

Bill

maybe.... you grew something else that wasn't a true manzano lol! Ive grown Brazilians both forms so I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.

Anyways, thats the fun part of this hobby...if you don't like something about what you have then just start fresh.

Heres my Manzano about to flower when I used to grow it next to a 10 ft pvc pipe.

Luckily , I found a true Manzano again this past weekend and just planted it 2 days ago.

Better in growth habit? More vigorous? Then I would agree.

Everyone has a different taste. I like sub acid tasting bananas. Manzano should be eaten fully ripe like turning black for it to have its punch.

I think we are Manzano’d out with this discussion lol
Get sue doesn’t have pictures of the 14 foot , skinny P stem banana that always snaps in the middle of the night with a small bunch lol!

Pitangadiego, you know you have my respect, both of us have been on this forum since the beginning and I even remember getting a Dwarf Namwah sport from you many many moons ago.

Re: I pulled out my Manzano.

Greenie, I don't appreciate your argumentative nature. This board is for discussion. Since you apparently know it all I don't know why you are here. Has it ever occurred to you that in a cooler climate the plant may grow different? That is the problem with thinking you know it all. You stop listening and stop learning.

Pitangadiego grows his Manzano in a very similar climate to mine and says he has the same experience. Bencelest grows Manzano in California and says they get to 12-14'. Interstingly I found an old post of yours where you say, "i prefer the manzano. The d. brazilian will will fruit anywhere from 8 to 10 ft while the manzano will hit about 12." I think you need to make up your mind.
