Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(

Its too hot here in NYC! 99F yesterday and the all time record of 102F is being challenged tomorrow. WIth humidity that is very low and nights in the 80s (or high 70s), the plants arent really thrilled. Most of my bananas are holding on and continuing to grow very well (particuarly the ice cream banana, dwarf cavendish, and super dwarf cavendish), but the musa basjoos are browning up. I just bought them but they clearly were not being grown in full sun. Ill probably have to cut all the leaves off and let them grow some sun resistant ones. They are handling the heat worse than any of my other plants (even my peace lily in shade isnt complaning!).

Good luck!

Unonan, I saw you guys are getting record heat!!I saw reports of 110F in some areas! Crazy! How's the humidity?

It gets hot here (it's 105F right now), but it's never humid. The bananas grow super fast in the extreme heat, but the leaf edges get crispy.

Palmtree, I have an icecream and it has done fine with 112F with 5% humidity. The only banana that i've had die from heat is Musa basjoo. It sucks, but they really can't take the heat.

I have a dwarf cavendish in full sun (all day) in 105F+ heat for weeks now and super low humidity that has been doing amazing. I'm surprised how well some of the bananas do in the extreme dry heat.

Pretty sure we haven't hit 100 yet this year
Not very many days we see temps that high
Tomorrow is supposed to be the last 90+ day, then back to mid 80's

The biggest magic of a continental climate - heat induced rainstorms - arrived today. Excellent. Temps fell by 20°F during the day. And this excellent humidity is making all life come greener than sun. Wonderful.

I will post some pics tomorrow or the day after, when we are back in 90ties. Cheers!

This is the coldest summer I remember. My Ice Cream and dwarf Cavendish banana plants are doing great but I wish it would get a little warmer.

Yup. It's not so difficult to predict this summer weather. Warm, warm, warm, hot, hot, hot, hot, 2 days raining.... And this cycle repeats until late August. ;)

According to Oklahoma standards, 90°F is too cold for summer. I understand that, but why do you want to have it warmer? That's pretty much a perfect temperature (85-94°F)

It got up to 105F today (an all time record). The ice cream banana is in full sun and grew an entire leaf but I did not have a chance to see the musa basjoos and Im a little afraid! Just a little bit of heat and they just burn. Although I will always respect them for there cold tolerance! I used to have bad luck with dwarf cavendish in heat but now they cant get enough of it. The heat really brings out there red color and mine has a ton of red on it this year (it almost looks like a blood banana from a distance) Everyday except for one is 90F or higher for the next 10 days! 4 days in a row that got up to 99F or higher! Very rare for NYC!

Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(

My bananas are melting!! The pseudostems are going soft and new leaf spike coming out has completely drooped over. I have never seen anything like it! My avocado tree has completely crisped up. The highs have been 110-115F and lows of 85-95F.

This has got to be one of the worst climates in the US. Phoenix is hotter, but they get hit by the monsoon rains. It rained for the second time this year a day ago. I counted at least 20 rain drops!!!

Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(

Sorry to hear that Adam. Here it rained twice, and after the rain the Sun came out heating it up to the high 90's creating a massive steam bath effect till it was burned off. We got 3 inches yesterday and my neighbors pond has moist soil but no visible standing water. Hope you get more than 20 drops next time. :^)

Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(

Thanks Michael! According to my thermometer, it got down to 96F last night and is already 102F before 9am. My weather underground sig thermometer seems to agree. Now both my Icecream and Cardaba have a drooping spike leaf as well :( WTF???

Oddly, the only banana plant I have that isn't phased by the heat is the Snow banana (Ensete glaucum)!!!

Wow that's pretty hot!! I think I'd have to set up some misters to cool the nanners to their liking. :^)
