Here comes the HEAT! :(
Expected high of 110F in my area this weekend. Highs up to 120F in lower elevations. Lows above 80F expected for the next 7 days. Hope the bananas don't fry! :(
On the bright side, the rest of the country looks lovely! |
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
To Funny.. Its been Hotter than normal the last several weeks. We got lucky and got cooled down a bit today by a shower. When its over 80 @ 2am its warm out. I know :^)

Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
Oh, I didn't mention the 10% humidity :'(
Abnshrek, 79F sounds perfect for bananas. I'm jealous :D |

Don't worry Velutina, I'll also be sharing beautiful weather this weekend! :woohoonaner:
After living here you realize seat belts make a good branding iron, asphalt has a liquid state, the cold tap is the same temperature as the hot one, and you break a sweat stepping out at 7:30 a.m. Great pool weather though, the water feels like body temperature. |

Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
Jarred removed the multiquote!!!! WHY?????
OK, velutina, glad to see you here. Don't worry about the warmth. As long as you irritate, bananas will grow better than in my temps (record lows in 160 years). My zone 8a this year feels like 3a and it's not getting better. Remember: it could always get worse. :) |
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
Its either HOT or COLD but neither in the middle, atleast not for long. Its 97F in the shade... In the sun, it feals like you could fry an egg on the car hood.:ha:

Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
wow thats hot! Here according to the heat index it's 108F and i thought that was bad!
|
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
I went out this morning to spray down the bananas at 9am and it was already 98F :(
It got up to 103F yesterday. The only damage so far is on an Ensete glaucum. Blake, I might just have to crack an egg on the road this weekend and post pics :D Amber, I don't think i've ever really experienced heat+humidity like you get there. At least when it reaches 108F here, the dry breeze cools you down. But the bananas don't appreciate it unfortunately. |
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
lol it literally feels like you walked into a sauna when you step outside lol Or a bathroom with a super hot shower going. the air almost feels to thick to breath lol Bananas love it though!
|
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
That must feel horrible Amber! :( At least in the desert the heat dries you up before you know it. One of my friends told me he went to Florida a few years back and it was so humid one day that he could actually see the air moving around him.
Is it really that bad? :camelnaner: <---------Awesome camel btw. |
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
LMAO it sure feels like you can see it, but no.....i have never "seen" air.......lol

Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
Important note: Never move to Arizona or Las Vegas! Maybe Florida though since it sounds a lot like here! We are at 85 degrees here with 45% humidity. We'll be having upper 80s [farh], with lows in the 60s for the next 5 days! :D
You people, in the Mohave-like areas, stay safe and don't forget the potato chips [salt really helps]! :) |
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
It was 95/96 here today, "feels like" 103
I installed a misting system out on the patio by the pool It really works too !! ![]() |
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
108 here today its hot
|
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
its 100 here in jersey and my plants are doing bad. im watering in the morning and nite. my leaves are are drying up and dying.
|
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
Its too hot here in NYC! 99F yesterday and the all time record of 102F is being challenged tomorrow. WIth humidity that is very low and nights in the 80s (or high 70s), the plants arent really thrilled. Most of my bananas are holding on and continuing to grow very well (particuarly the ice cream banana, dwarf cavendish, and super dwarf cavendish), but the musa basjoos are browning up. I just bought them but they clearly were not being grown in full sun. Ill probably have to cut all the leaves off and let them grow some sun resistant ones. They are handling the heat worse than any of my other plants (even my peace lily in shade isnt complaning!).
Good luck! |
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
Unonan, I saw you guys are getting record heat!!I saw reports of 110F in some areas! Crazy! How's the humidity?
It gets hot here (it's 105F right now), but it's never humid. The bananas grow super fast in the extreme heat, but the leaf edges get crispy. |

Palmtree, I have an icecream and it has done fine with 112F with 5% humidity. The only banana that i've had die from heat is Musa basjoo. It sucks, but they really can't take the heat. I have a dwarf cavendish in full sun (all day) in 105F+ heat for weeks now and super low humidity that has been doing amazing. I'm surprised how well some of the bananas do in the extreme dry heat. |
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
My Saba and dc's and sdc are doing good my orinco is doing awsome. My ensente murelli ( however u spell) and basjoos are crispy i just built a shade house over them i hope it helps....

Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
I can say the lil prince isn't taking this heat so well. Its in full sun..
|
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
Pretty sure we haven't hit 100 yet this year
Not very many days we see temps that high Tomorrow is supposed to be the last 90+ day, then back to mid 80's |
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
The biggest magic of a continental climate - heat induced rainstorms - arrived today. Excellent. Temps fell by 20°F during the day. And this excellent humidity is making all life come greener than sun. Wonderful.
I will post some pics tomorrow or the day after, when we are back in 90ties. Cheers! |

Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
This is the coldest summer I remember. My Ice Cream and dwarf Cavendish banana plants are doing great but I wish it would get a little warmer.

Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
My bananas are melting!! The pseudostems are going soft and new leaf spike coming out has completely drooped over. I have never seen anything like it! My avocado tree has completely crisped up. The highs have been 110-115F and lows of 85-95F.
This has got to be one of the worst climates in the US. Phoenix is hotter, but they get hit by the monsoon rains. It rained for the second time this year a day ago. I counted at least 20 rain drops!!! |
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
Sorry to hear that Adam. Here it rained twice, and after the rain the Sun came out heating it up to the high 90's creating a massive steam bath effect till it was burned off. We got 3 inches yesterday and my neighbors pond has moist soil but no visible standing water. Hope you get more than 20 drops next time. :^)

Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
Thanks Michael! According to my thermometer, it got down to 96F last night and is already 102F before 9am. My weather underground sig thermometer seems to agree. Now both my Icecream and Cardaba have a drooping spike leaf as well :( WTF???
Oddly, the only banana plant I have that isn't phased by the heat is the Snow banana (Ensete glaucum)!!! |
Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
Wow that's pretty hot!! I think I'd have to set up some misters to cool the nanners to their liking. :^)

Re: Here comes the HEAT! :(
