Hi, i live in Reading, my 2 big musa basjoo's are doing really good in their second year.
What type's do you have? Marc. |
Re: Growing banana plants in the UK

Re: Growing banana plants in the UK
I have what i thought was a Basjoo that is in its second year and is doing really well but someone on here has said they think it is sikkimensis but what ever it is it lasted the winter well and has shot up since spring and is producing a leaf a week. I also have a baby velutina only about 8 inches tall and 3 Musella lasiocarpa again they are only about 8 inches, so i have 4 new babies in the garden to look after. Cant wait for next spring and them all start shotting up.

Re: Growing banana plants in the UK
Hi chaps!
This is also my first year of bananas. I currently have a smashing Sikkimensis 'Red Tiger' planted in my border next to some dark leaved cannas with bright red flowers. The sikki has really nice red stripes at the moment, producing one leaf a week fed with chicken poo and blanket weed from the pond as mulch! Waiting for my first puppy! I am also trying to germinate some Red Tiger seeds, nothing yet after two weeks. Have you chaps tried germinating seeds yet? |
Re: Growing banana plants in the UK
Hi there it is fun groweing these great plants aint it. I understand what you mean with the seeds i have lots of seeds germinating at the moment but nothing yet, good job i think or i will be over run with bananas of different types. How big is you nana now?

Re: Growing banana plants in the UK
It's about 4 feet high with 2 foot leaves. I keep rooting around the base to see if any pups, no life yet.
How long have your seeds been in? I am using Eralnds method posted on here. With a heat mat etc.... |
Re: Growing banana plants in the UK
My seeds have been in for about 2 weeks trying several methods to find the best for myself. I noticed that they can take months to germiate so could be a wait but i am sure it will be worth it. I have been lucky i have been over run with pups cant believe it as the plant only went in last year and didn't really get much growth till this spring. Mine is in a whisky barrel, cut down, planted in miracle grow compost mixed with sharp sand and i feed it once a week with miracle grow food. Seems to be doing the trick i cant wait to see how high it will grow this year.
