Fruit time

Hey I'm new here. I have a new dwarf namwah about 3ft now. I was just wondering, what have people been observing as fruiting times? Can a banana fruit in one season?

It can fruit in one season depending on where you are located. Hawaii absolutely, other continental US not too likely. Maybe South Florida... Where are you located?

I am located in western North Carolina but I do have a small greenhouse. So far I have been very efficient at keeping temperature around 70f all winter. I'm hoping that I can keep a small banana in the greenhouse through winters, then when temperatures rise, move it outside where it can grow as tall as it wants! Lol

Are you growing it in a container? Planning on planting it out in the ground in the summer? It might take longer than a season.

It is currently in a container but if it would grow considerably faster in the ground, I would consider it.

What are your minimum temperatures like in the winter? I believe DNW is stem hardy to the mid twenties and root hardy to the low twenties.

I would suggest in-ground summer and in a container overwinter in your greenhouse for best growth. It will probably take 2-3 years to fruit in your area depending on care/conditions. There is no real 'time to fruit' for bananas....it's a certain stage of growth they reach. Really depends on conditions, could be 1 year, could be 3+. It's more dependent on pseudostem height than time duration. Not sure what height DNW fruit at typically, but I'm sure you might find something in the wiki or others who grow it will chime in. Once again, though....even height will vary some depending on conditions.

Time from planting to harvest in bananas depends on a lot of factors, but probably most important is having (or creating) a tropical climate. In that climate, with plenty of water, light, and nutrients, many varieties will produce ripe fruit in about a year and some in less than a year.
