To plant a banana close to a large tree? Some of the large trees have very open canopies so they let through a lot of light. Is there a reason not to do this or things to avoid?

Apart from directional spread of the rhizome and the natural sunthirstiness of bananas, you might find that the two compete for water. I wouldn't reccomend it, but if it's the space that you've got, go ahead and try it.
