Basjoo's in the heat.
My Basjoos are doing horible this year. the temps have been near 100 for 3-4 weeks. They are much smaller than normal. They seem to stand still and put on a leaf every 10 days or so. They are growing in a pure organic soil mulched up gettin 6-7 hrs a day in the same spot they've been in for 4 yrs. My buddies are doing great but recieve a lot more shade and no afternoon sun. Thinking about moving them next year to a shadier area. Basjoos seem to prefer less light and grow well in a semi shade area where obviously the temps are lower. Any thoughts on growing them in the shade or tips please charm in. Thanx in advance.-Nate

Re: Basjoo's in the heat.
I hear that Basjoos don't like high temps in general. But they do better in cooler temps where many other bananas start to slow down.

Re: Basjoo's in the heat.
My Basjoo never do well during mild winters and hot summers, they have always liked cold winters and mild summers without the extreme heat .

Re: Basjoo's in the heat.
When I moved to the desert, I brought along my basjoos. They all died the first summer. Even the ones planted in full shade.
Moving them seems like a good idea. Partial shade produces better foliage, in my experience. |

Re: Basjoo's in the heat.
Mine seem to be doing good. they are on the east side of house. it has been around 100 F for the last 2 weeks. they get full sun till around 2pm. I live in the okanagan in BC Canada. We normally get very little wind. I try to water the banana plant every morning before going to work when it is this hot. It has 4 pups off it now. I also took 2 pups and planted in less sunny areas will see how they do.

Re: Basjoo's in the heat.
It was very hot here for the past two weeks we had one day at 37 ( 100f)!The hottest it's been in three years. Otherwise it's been in the low to mid 30s I think that's around 90 F but today it's pretty Nasty only 17C. I eish our winters were more like the okanogans. It just goes from one extreme to another.
