Default Bananas and snow

Just a question about snow. My weather has been great in 6a. Sunny and well above normal, temps in the 70's&80's. My bananas were out growing their winter homes and being bent as there was no where to grow up. So I decieded to uncover them. I removed the cage, the raps and the mulch, let them have a good start. I was looking at them yesterday and thought "I'm going to get some decent growth this year". Should have never said that! Last night the news claimed up to 6" of SNOW tomorrow. I am not going through all the trouble of packing them up again. So I hope they make it. It is going to be cold for 2-3 days, temps in the 40's. Then warming back up into the 50-60's. Has anyone else had this problem before and if so how did you handle it, Did you bananas make it? Thanks

This years weather has been beyond bizarre. Even in South Ga it looks like a possible frost. Doggone it was warmer in February.

There are a couple threads now of cold weather and bananas.Oh nooo, I just checked out weather and we're getting a bit of snow too possibly. I would suggest putting, what I use is an old trash can and some christmas lights and there hasn't been a problem yet!

I would cover the bananas to protect them from the snow, but temps into the low 40s should be fine. It got down to 34 here and no damage to my bananas.

Bananas are full of water, so freezing is not good, BUT--- bananas like Musa Basjoo and Musella Lasiocarpa will not freeze, but will die to the ground. They are still not dead, and the snow that falls on them can be good warm isolation!

Bananas are leafing out at 5' high and bent ovet due to cover. I usually put in wire cages with mulch"bark chips". That way I can use the mulch in the spring for other beds. Putting the cages back up and rakeing 10 yards of mulch is out of the question in such a short time. I was hoping someone had a late snow to tell me what to expect. In the years I've been doing this I always avoid the end of winter blast. Just not this year. Thanks

I do not know, how many banana plants you have, but grab a couple of empty 1gal plastic containers,
fill them with hot water and place them close to the base of the plants, late at night and toss an old
quilt or similar over it.

Good luck!

Olaf
PS: you may want to explain to whoever does the laundry in your place, that a quilt or blanket is
much faster washed than a banana regrown.
